Flying Squirrels are top 'Explorers'

The Flying Squirrels from Tamaqua Elementary School took the first place prize during the 2012 fourth and fifth grade (Explorers division) Envirothon, held at the Carbon County Environmental Education Center in Summit Hill on Tuesday. Members of the Flying Squirrels are front, from left, Angela Faust, class advisor; Kayla Sherry, captain; Kaitlyn Erbe; Joe Gursky; Luke Mateyak; and Ilan Basrawi. With the team are, back, Franklin Klock, CCEEC naturalist; Ed Dudley, Lions Club past district governor; Lions Club District Governor Scott Dudley; and David Hawk, Lions Club Region Two Zone A Chairperson of District 14-U. The Envirothon events are sponsored by area Lions clubs. Other teams that placed are: Penn Kidder Owls of Penn Kidder Elementary, second; L.B. Mocking Jay of L.B. Morris Elementary, third; and the Nuclear Ninjas of Lehighton Middle School, honorable mention.
