Carbon EMA plans statewide emergency class

Published February 06. 2012 05:03PM

The Carbon County Emergency Management Agency, 1264 Emergency Lane, Nesquehoning, will be the site of the Office of the State Fire Commissioner - Pennsylvania State Fire Academy's special training program "Responding to Ethanol Incidents," on Saturday, April 28. The class runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Continuing the efforts to reduce the number of firefighter injuries and line of duty deaths, state Fire Commissioner Ed Mann, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, have combined forces in presenting this informative program to fire departments and municipal officials throughout the Commonwealth.

The Office of the State Fire Commissioner-Pennsylvania State Fire Academy is offering this new class utilizing curriculum from the International Association of Fire Chiefs.

For first responders, the addition of ethanol to gasoline presents some unique firefighting challenges. Traditional methods of firefighting against hydrocarbon (gasoline) fires have been found to be ineffective against these polar solvent-type (ethanol-blended) fuels.

The training program will cover a host of issues, including ethanol and blended fuels, transportation of ethanol blended fuels, storage and dispensing and fire fighting foam principles for ethanol blended fuels.

To register, contact the Carbon County EMA at (570) 325-3097 to obtain an application. Registration is mandatory, no walk-ins will be permitted. Applications must be returned to Patrick Pauly at the PA State Fire Academy, 1150 Riverside Drive, Lewistown, PA 17044, or fax it to (717) 248-3580, by April 13.
