Music program proposed to be held in JT district office

A presentation was given at Monday night's Jim Thorpe school board meeting about bringing a music program called, Music Together, to Carbon County. Rachel DiMiccio, a licensed Music Together Instructor, proposed to the school board to have the program held in a classroom in the district office.

"Music Together is a research based international program being taught in 35 countries," stated DiMiccio."It is a music and movement program for families with children from birth to age 5," she said. The program is normally set in 10 week semesters meeting once a week for 45 minutes. DiMiccio wishes to start with a six week summer program, while possibly having a weeknight session and a weekend session.Music Together gives children the chance to experience music, singing, movement, and instrument play in an informal atmosphere. Music Together also gives children's parents/ guardians the chance to experience the classes with them. The program will involve the community and provide outreach to families of all sorts of backgrounds."The goal of the program is to help children develop basic music competence. Meaning they will be able to accurately keep the rhythm and sing it in tune," said DiMiccio.DiMiccio adds, "There is also a large parent support and parenting component of this program. That means at Music Together the children are our students but the parents are also our students."Currently there is no Music Together program in Carbon County.DiMiccio carries liability insurance and needs a spacious classroom for the children to move around in. She proposed to rent a classroom in the district office. The school board will discuss possible rental rates for the use of a classroom. The proposal will be discussed and voted on at a later board meeting.
