Motorcycle crashes probed

Two motorcycle crashes, both occurring over the past weekend, were probed by state police at Lehighton.

A crash occurred about 2:34 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, along SR534 at the intersection with Barry S Road, in Polk Township, Monroe County. Troopers said William Somers, 46, of Long Valley, N.J., was operating a Honda Goldwing GL while taking part in a road course and attempted a right turn off 115 onto Barry S and turned too late, locked up his brakes which caused the bike to lay on its right side.Somers and his passenger, Diane C. Somers, 47, same address, both sustained road burns. Both were transported to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg, by West End ambulance.On Sunday, July 18, a crash occurred along Smith Lane Road in East Penn Township, Carbon County. Troopers said Steve Herskovits, 57, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was driving a 2007 Harley-Davidson southbound at a speed which was unsafe for conditions, troopers said, due to a curve in the road and loose gravel. Herskovits attempted to negotiate the curve and lost control due to the gravel and struck a small embankment along the berm.Troopers said Herskovits was not injured. He was cited for driving a vehicle at a (un) safe speed.In both accidents, the three involved were wearing helmets, troopers noted.
