At Slatington's regular meeting of council held Monday night Gary Phillips, who is chairman of the borough's water authority, invited council to the groundbreaking for the PENNVEST project on Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. the borough garage.

Phillips said that a newsletter is being sent out to all of the citizens of the borough to update them on the project.Council voted to give the water authority permission to start the bid process for a backup generator for the waste water treatment plant.In other business, council voted to direct Road-Con Inc. to finish the paving of the parking lot at Center and Main streets, and Bob Steets, of Slatington, requested that a four-way stop be placed at the intersection of Chestnut and Center streets. Police Chief David Rachman agreed that this intersection is dangerous but didn't think that a four-way stop would help because the hill is so steep that it would be impossible to stop coming down Center Street with snow on the ground.Rachman suggested prohibiting parking at the corners of Center Street at that intersection so that someone coming off of Chestnut Street would have better vision of Center Street. Nicole Breneman, who lives on Center Street, suggested displaying "Children at Play" signs on Center Street to try to get people to slow down.Councilwoman Kris Burek asked everyone to keep Councilman Bill Fister in their thoughts since he has been under the weather, and she told council that trees from the Tree Vitalize grant through Lehigh County and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources have arrived and that the project, which includes planting 30 trees along Main Street, should be completed by next week. She thanked the borough crew for their hard work.Mayor Walter Niedermeyer, who was recently named Mayor of the Year by the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, said that the masonry work on the Slatington Trailhead project has been completed and that it's up to the carpenters now to get the project completed.Dan Stevens, of Northern Lehigh Future Focus, reported that the planter around the "Welcome to Slatington" sign at the trailhead has been completed. Future Focus planned and coordinated this project for the Borough of Slatington, which used a grant that it received from Lehigh County for the project. The base of the sign was designed to match the gateway garden and the new buildings at the trailhead, once they are completed. With money that is left from this grant, the borough will also be putting up banners on the new General Morgan Bridge, and they will be installing an information kiosk at the Slatington Trailhead. It will have panels for information and a community bulletin board.
