Tamaqua man facing charges

Published November 11. 2009 05:00PM

A Tamaqua man faces drug and theft related charges following a Sunday incident in the borough.

Police officers were dispatched to 406 Pitt St. at 8:45 a.m. for a reported theft by an intoxicated person. Upon arrival they observed Stephen M. Melnick, 49, stumbling along the street. Melnick was questioned and detained until officers could speak with the complainant, a neighbor of Melnick's.

The man told officers he heard a loud bang in the apartment complex hallway. When he looked out he saw Melnick remove a decorative wreath from another tenant's door.

The wreath was recovered from Melnick's apartment. Officers discovered a One Touch test strip container on Melnick's person. It contained 11 hydrocodone pills instead of test strips.

Melnick was charged with misbranding and theft.
