A total of 263 cases were started in January in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Joann M. Behrens, according to a monthly statistical report released by the officeholder. A breakdown of the cases is as follows:
Civil actions, 22; custody complaints, 19; district justice appeals, 2; divorce complaints, 15; ejectment, 1; license appeals, 2; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 22; judgments, 136; miscellaneous, 1; protection from abuse petitions, 30; quiet title action, 1; auditor/financial reports, 3; court appointments, 6; and stipulations/waivers of liens, 3. The office staff also received and processed 83 applications for U.S. Passports.
Behrens' financial report shows $26,113.04 was generated last month as follows: prothonotary's fees, $21,787.28; interest income $9.19; PFA Surcharge, courts, $56.50; PFA Surcharge, Sheriff, $63; custody fees, $550; data processing fees, $3,647.07.
The prothonotary also remitted $2,457.63 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, representing state fees collected locally, and $30 to the Administrative Offices of the Pennsylvania Courts, this being surcharges on new custody cases in accordance with Act 119 of 1996. Another $928.50 was deposited in the Prothonotary's Automation Fund for future use in automating the office.
