The Northwestern cross country teams flexed their muscles as both the boys and girls swept multi-team Colonial League meets on Wednesday.

CROSS COUNTRY

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

North Schuylkill swept Tamaqua in a Schuylkill League meet.

The Spartan boys captured four of the top five places en route to a 19-38 victory. Brendan Shearn crossed the tape in 17:08, over two minutes ahead of second-place Devin Mashack.

The Lady Spartans rolled to an 18-43 victory. North Schuylkill finished 1-2-3 with Abby Warner crossing first in a time of 22:25.

Blue Mountain-Pottsville-Jim Thorpe

In a Schuylkill League tri-meet, the Pottsville boys and girls swept Blue Mountain and Jim Thorpe.

The Jim Thorpe boys managed a 16-44 victory over Blue Mountain behind a third-place finish from Christian Fields (19:02). The Olympians placed four runners in the top seven including Jonathan Condly, Jake Saxon and Zach Nace. Pottsville defeated Jim Thorpe 24-31.

In the girls meet, Pottsville defeated Jim Thorpe 16-47, while Blue Mountain posted a 17-46 victory over the Lady Olympians. Courtney Capper (eighth place) was the lone Olympian to place.

Palmerton struggled in yesterday's seven-team Colonial League meet.

In the boys meet, Palmerton defeated Palisades 25-30, but lost to Bangor, Wilson, Catasauqua, Saucon Valley and Notre Dame (E.S.). Sean Seiler finished in 16th place for the Bombers.

The Lady Bombers defeated Palisades (25-30) and Catasauqua (15-50), but suffered setbacks to Bangor, Wilson, Saucon Valley and Notre Dame (E.S.). Janel Tracy paced Palmerton with an 18th place finish.

Northern Lehigh-Pen Argyl-Salisbury-NDGP-Moravian -So. Lehigh-Northwestern

The Northwestern cross country team had plenty of success in a seven-team Colonial League meet. The Tigers swept Moravian Academy, Notre Dame, Pen Argyl, Salisbury, Southern Lehigh and Northern Lehigh.

Northwestern's Tyler Stelmack won the boys race with a time of 16:47.27. Six Northwestern runners finished in the top nine.

For the Lady Tigers, Haley Yost led the way with a second-place finish, which paced three Lady Tigers that finished in the top five.

The Northern Lehigh boys defeated Notre Dame, Pen Argyl and Salisbury, but suffered losses to Northwestern, Southern Lehigh and Moravian Academy. Matt Pender led the Bulldogs with a 13th place finish.

The Lady Bulldogs didn't finish with enough runners to score.

Zimmerman scored a pair of goals to lead the Cardinals.

Olympian goalie Rebecca Cressman made 25 saves.

Jim Thorpe won the JV match, 4-0 as Galvin scored a pair of goals.

Jim Thorpe posted a 3-0 Schuylkill League shutout over Pottsville.

Corey Ligenza got the Olympians on the board late in the first half, while Steven Principe and Matt Rich added goals in the second half. Anthony Pavia and Principe had one assist apiece.

Jim Thorpe's Justin Kaminski made four saves in goal for the Olympians.

FIELD HOCKEY

PM East-Lehighton

Haylee Murtha scored her second goal of the game with 2:42 left in overtime, as she led Pocono Mountain East to a 3-2 Mountain Valley Conference victory over Lehighton.

Lehighton scored the first two goals of the game. Sage Terembula got the Indians on the board off a Sarah Keer assist, while Keer tacked on a goal of her own.

The Cardinals tied it up at 2-2 with Murtha's first goal late in regulation (4:04) before her eventual game-winner late in overtime.

Pocono Mountain East outshot Lehighton 12-11. Lauren Burrows made 11 saves for the Tribe.

In the JV game, Pocono Mountain East was a 2-0 winner.

GIRLS TENNIS

ES North-Pleasant Valley

In a rescheduled match from Tuesday night, Pleasant Valley defeated East Stroudsburg North 4-3.

Madison Olexson and Emily Thek posted straight-set singles victories for the Bears. The duo later teamed up for a 6-4, 6-3 victory in doubles play.

The doubles tandem of Cass Snook and Ellie Heron also scored a victory for Pleasant Valley.
