The Tamaqua Area School District named coaches in two sports during Tuesday's regular school board meeting held in the Tamaqua Area Middle School Conference Room.

Jay Pilla, Nesquehoning, was named volunteer baseball coach; Courtney McCarroll, Tamaqua, assistant girls soccer coach for 2012-13 at a stipend to be determined; Amanda Peters, Tamaqua; Kristen Kistler, New Ringgold; Ken Mateyak, Andreas; and Bobby Clements, Lehighton, volunteer girls soccer coaches.In other action, the board approved the purchase of Simplex-Grinnell wireless clocks and head-end equipment totalling $14,893. The clocks will be used at Tamaqua Elementary School.The board entered into a three-year contract with PenTeleData beginning July 1, 2012, to and including June 30, 2015, for district-wide Internet and wireless area network service at a cost of $76,570. Applying the district's e-rate, a process through the Schools and Libraries Program of the Universal Service Fund, would allow for a discount of 60 percent, reducing the net cost to $30,624.The board entered into a contract with Service Electric Telephone beginning July 1, 2012, to and including June 30, 2015, for telephone service at a cost of $11,724 per year, which will net to $4,690 once the e-rate discount is applied.The board entered into a memorandum of understanding with St. Luke's Community Health Department to provide vision testing for students.The board appointed Professional School Photography as the district's photographer for the 2012-13 school year.In personnel matters, the board approved the retirement of Janet Coleman, part-time custodian, effective March 30; unpaid leave of absence of Elaine Fowler, elementary nurse, for April 2,3,4 and 13, 2012; approval of Susan Ziegler, Andreas, to the substitute guest teacher list contingent upon submission of necessary documentation; accepted the resignation of Stephanie Balliet, part-time paraprofessional, effective February 24; approved a request of Doreen Siegfried, full-time paraprofessional, for three unpaid days of absense May 9, 10 and 11; approved a request of Thelma Urban, high school teacher, to begin an intermittent family and medical leave to commence March 19.The board also will advertise for two maintenance/grounds helper positions.The board approved the request for out-of-state trips, including: Lawrence Capozzelli, physics teacher, Annual Physics Day, Great Adventure, N.J., May 4; and

M.A.G.I.C. program coordinator, middle school, Adventure Aquarium, Camden, N. J., April 23.The board approved one student for tutorial service from Lehigh Valley Hospital's Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program for 10 hours of education per week.The board ratified the superintendent's approval to enter into collaboration to participate in the activities of the proposed Family Literacy Program.The board appointed Robert J. Davision and Associates, LLC, as the district's independent auditor, and approved the retirement of Sandra L. Hoppes, cafeteria worker, effective May 31.The board also approved the request of Jocelyn Shellhammer, cafeteria worker, for unpaid medical leave of absence from February 6 to April 1.According to Mark Rother, chairman, hearing committee, the board will expel a middle school student for one calendar year for violation of the Tamaqua Area School District discipline policy.Under communications, Superintendent Carol Makuta read a letter from Aaron Raymond, president, Tamaqua Area Raider Band Boosters, who expressed gratitude for the district's support of the recent appearance of the Raider Band in Disney World. Raymond said it was "a fantastic experience" for the band "to entertain others from around the world."
