The Palmerton High School boys' basketball program remains without a coach.
A motion to appoint Mark Maholick to the post died for lack of a majority vote after the school board deadlocked 4-4 with one abstention on Tuesday.
Directors Michael Ballard, Darlene Yeakel, Clarence Myers and board President Barry Scherer were in favor. Directors Carl Bieling, Carol Dwyer, Stuart Henritzy and Susan Debski were opposed.
Director Tina Snyder - the wife of former coach Mike Snyder - abstained from the vote. She could have broken the tie with a yes vote, but declined to do so.
The motion was to hire Maholick - who ended this past season as the team's interim coach - as head boys' basketball coach at the rate of $5,901 per the negotiated contract for the 2011-12 school year.
After the vote, resident Christine Lesher asked the board what its next step would be to fill the position. The board said it would likely have the situation resolved by next month.
"I'm disappointed to say the least," said Maholick about the vote. "I received a call from Athletic Director Bill Congdon last night after the meeting and I haven't heard from anyone else, so I don't know where things stand right now."
Maholick has stayed involved with the players during the off-season, involved them in some weight training and was preparing summer workouts.
In January, he was chosen to replace Snyder, who began the season as the team's head coach.
Mike Snyder was hired in June of 2008 to replace Ridge Hughes, who had coached the team the previous two seasons. He also coached the team in the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons.
In a related matter, the board on a 7-2 vote, with Tina Snyder and Bieling opposed, retroactively approved the head boys' basketball coach, assistant boys' basketball coach and volunteer assistant coach salaries to reflect change in coaching assignments mid-season of the 2010-11 school year.
Afterward, the board, on a 7-1 vote with one abstention, removed the motion recommending approval of to be announced for the head boys' basketball coach. Debski was opposed. Tina Snyder abstained.
Also, the board, on an 8-1 vote, with Tina Snyder opposed, approved Donald Delich as head girls' basketball coach at a stipend of $5,901.
In a related matter, the board unanimously approved the following extracurricular positions per the negotiated contract for the 2011-12 school year:
- David Lavin, head wrestling coach, $5,901
- Steve Hicks, head boys' soccer coach, $3,881
- Ryan Sharkazy, assistant boys' soccer coach, $2,548
- Travis Fink, assistant football coach, $3,863
- Andrew Remsing, assistant football coach, $3,863
- Ryan McGrath, assistant football coach, $1,932
- Sheri Anthony, volunteer field hockey coach
