Tamaqua Mayor Christian P. Morrison has announced his campaign for Schuylkill County Commissioner in the May 17 Democratic Primary Election.

Morrison is currently in his second term as Tamaqua Mayor, having first been elected in 2005 and successfully re-elected in 2009. He is the only mayor ever seated in the history of the borough from the Democratic Party.Morrison, the son of Gene and Rita (Cicioni) Morrison of Rush Township, has lived on Orwigsburg Street in Tamaqua since 1996. Mayor Morrison is a member of the Tamaqua Area High School Class of 1988. He is employed by the Kovatch Corporation, Nesquehoning, as an automotive electrician, where he has worked for the past 16 years.In addition to serving as Mayor, Morrison also spends a significant amount of his time in civic and community involvement. He holds memberships in the following organizations: South Ward Fire Company (Tamaqua), Sub-Committee Chair of Southward Neighborhood Committee (Revitalization/Improvement group modeled after the Elm Street program), Schuylkill County 2010 Census Board, 21st Century Community Learning Center Advisory Board (After-school program for the Tamaqua Area Middle School), and C.H. Berry American Legion Post 173 (where Morrison participates in parade organizing and is an active Color Guard member). He also served as an organizer for Reality Tour drug prevention program.Morrison is president of the Schuylkill County Boroughs' Association and is a member of the PA State Mayors' Association, Association of Mayors of Boroughs of PA, and the Pa. State Association of Boroughs.As chairman of the police pension committee he has worked with borough council and staff to make improvements and financial savings to the structure of the pension plan.Morrison has been engaged in police regionalization efforts, working closely not only with Tamaqua Borough Council, but also with the leadership of surrounding communities.Morrison is active as the Meeting Chairman of the Tri-County Polycythemia Vera Advisory Committee and strives to keep the public updated on the progress of important ongoing environmental and health studies. He is a member of the Schuylkill County advisory board to the National Children's (Health) Study, which is examining environmental influences on children's health and development- the largest study of children's health ever conducted in the United States.Morrison won the 2004 Democratic nomination for State Representative in the 124th Legislative District. He continues to work at building the Democrat Party as the president of the Eastern Schuylkill Democrats. In addition, he serves on the County Democratic Executive Board as the 124th District Chairman.
