Dies after crash

A Tamaqua woman died following a one-car accident Thursday morning in which the vehicle she was driving struck a garage.

Margaret J. Doughty, 82, of the Tamaqua Hi-Rise, was pronounced dead in the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Cedar Crest, by the Lehigh County coroner.She was flown there by MedEvac helicopter.A passenger in her car, Neida Reinart, 86, also of the Tamaqua Hi-Rise, was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital Center in Fountain Hill. Her condition was not available this morning.She was flown there by PennStar helicopter.The accident happened at about 9 a.m. on West White Bear Drive in Summit Hill near the Tamaqua borough line.Doughty was traveling east on the two-lane road when for some unknown reason, her car went off the right side of the road.The vehicle struck the garage, which was believed built in the 1850s, and flipped onto its roof, coming to rest across the two lanes.Both were trapped inside the vehicle when police, ambulance, and fire department personnel arrived on the scene.The garage, which was constructed of stone and owned by John Carnish, had major damages. Carnish said the garage was built sometime in the 1800s and believes it was in the 1850s.Police said the accident remains under investigation. The investigating officer is Lori Leinhard of the Summit Hill Police Department.Responding to the scene were members of Summit Hill and Lansford Fire Departments and the Lehighton Ambulance Corps.Traffic control was handled by Summit Hill fire police.
