In Afghanistan

CDR. Joseph E. Strauss, the son of Paul and JoAnn Strauss of Hauto, has been deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan.

He is the head orthopedic doctor in charge of the surgeries and taking care of the wounded soldiers.

St. Katharine Drexel

The blessing of Easter baskets will take place at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford, on Saturday, April 3, beginning at noon.

The parish's Easter vigil will be held on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Easter Sunday Masses will be celebrated on Sunday, April 4, at 8 and 10:30 a.m.

Due to construction work being done on East Phillip Street between Second and Third streets, the school bus stop will be temporarily moved to the corner of Second Street and East Phillip Street, and the corner of Fourth and East Phillip Street.

This move is only until the work is done and should be for about three weeks. Upon completion, the bus stop will resume its usual place on East Phillip between Second and Third streets.

Residents should also note that the winter parking regulations are no longer in effect.

Conservation Club

The Nesquehoning Conservation Club will hold a meeting on April 7 at 6:30 p.m., at MapleShade Meadows. Members are urged to attend this meeting as plans for the upcoming Children's Fishing Derby on May 8 will be finalized. The 2010 dues can be paid at the meeting or to any club officer.

Don't forget to bring your Redner's Save A Tapes to the meeting.

A thank you goes out to all the volunteers who helped with the stream work this past Saturday. The club is planning another event for Saturday, April 10.

PV Senior Center

The Panther Valley Senior Center has announced its list of activities for April.

The Senior Game Practices will be held each Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Lehighton Senior Center. Chair exercises are held on Mondays and Fridays at the PV Senior Center starting at 10 a.m.

On April 1 wear something silly for April Fool's Day. April 2 is Good Friday and the center is closed.

PV Golden Agers

Forty-seven members attended the March 22 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers. The inspirational reading "Spring Time" was read of Irene Hudasky. Irish melodies were sung by the chorus conducted by Marian Shuler.

Seventeen ladies paraded around the hall to the tune of "Peter Cottontail" and "In Your Easter Bonnet." The guest of the day was Helen Rizzo, mother of Marian Shuler. Helen celebrated her 96 birthday recently.

VFW auxiliary

The ladies auxiliary to the VFW Post 8008 will hold a meeting on Tuesday, April 13, at the post home beginning at 6:30 p.m. Nomination and election of officers for 2010-2011 will be held at the April meeting.

The 61st Anniversary dinner of the auxiliary's charter will be held on Thursday, April 22 at 6 p.m., at Macaluso's. Reservations are required. Contact Maureen at (570) 669-9578 to make your reservation. Deadline is April 18.

Summit Hill

Offering scholarship

The Summit Hill Lions Club is offering a $250 award to a graduating senior from Marian Catholic and Panther Valley High School for community service.

For more information on this award, contact the guidance counselor at your respective high school.

The deadline for applicants is March 31.

Annual campaign
