Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. Join in the Halloween fun and wear a costume. Bring a bag lunch. Cider and doughnuts will be served. They will play bingo for prizes.

St. Matthew's UCC in Kunkletown will hold its annual Halloween Party on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. Come dressed in costumes and win a prize. There will be games and refreshments.

The Tamaqua Elementary Parent Teacher Organization met Oct. 12, in the school library, with 40 members in attendance. The group discussed the Raider Run, trick or treat and a book fair.

Safe trick or treat at the Tamaqua Elementary School will be held Oct. 25, while trick or treat at Rush Elementary School will be Oct. 26. Rush students will have a Halloween parade on Oct. 29. Details can be found in student folders.

A book fair is scheduled at Rush Elementary School. Family night will be Oct. 28. The public is welcome.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Oct. 12 at the Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 45 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation.

Reports were presented by treasurer Shirley Becker and secretary Florina Martin, who also provided inspirational readings. Birthday wishes were extended to Louise Horn.

The annual Christmas party will be held Dec. 14.

Harvest Home celebration

Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville will celebrate Harvest Home Sunday during the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services on Oct. 24. Nonperishable food items as well as garden fruits and vegetables are welcome.

All items will be used to help those in need in the community.

Free historical movie

On Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1:30 p.m., the Western Pocono Community Library will present the historical movie "A More Perfect Union: America Becomes a Nation," in the Community Room at the west end of the library.

Summit Hill

Lions to meet

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Lions Club will be held Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. at the Parkview Inn. Dr. Kenneth Vermillion, president, will be in charge of the session.

The guest speaker will be Bob Argot, past district governor. His topic will be the Lions Clubs International Foundation, which helps with national and international disaster relief and other humanitarian projects.

Trick or Treat

Trick or Treat night will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27 in the Borough of Palmerton. Residents are reminded to leave their porch lights on if they are participating. Drivers are cautioned to watch for children in the streets.

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Avenue, will be open to greet Halloweeners with candy and hot chocolate.

Community supper

A free community meal will be held from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 28, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 365 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton.

Halloween parade

The Tamaqua Halloween Parade will be held Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. The rain date is Wednesday, Oct. 27.

The parade will be sponsored by the Tamaqua Lions Club, with assistance from the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce. The Tamaqua Wireless Association will provide communication along the parade route.

Entries are being accepted for floats/motorized units and marching units. The deadline for registration is Oct. 15.

Slatington Crime Watch

The next meeting of the Slatington Crime Watch will be 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Slatington Borough Hall. Join in to hear what's happening in the area. Thanks to everyone who helped make the third annual Community Yard Sale a success. There were over 100 families that participated this year.

Please be on the lookout for any suspicious activities in the borough and call 911 immediately. There have been several issues with graffiti in the Walnut Street area and kids walking in the wet cement.

Historical society speaker

The Polk Township Historical Society will meet on Monday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Polk Township Municipal Building, Kresgeville. The evening's guest speaker will be William Dorshimer, who served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He will share memories of his experiences as a member of the liberation forces in the European Theater. A short business meeting will follow the special presentation. Everyone is welcome to attend.
