Helping Haiti

Members of the West End Lions Club went public to accept donations for Haiti. Club President Helen Koshensky says that as soon as people, who were running in and out of the bank where she and her husband Bruce were collecting found out what they were collecting for, they immediately came over and put in whatever they could.

TOPS

The Tamaqua Chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets every Wednesday, from 6-8 p.m., in the Tamaqua Salvation Army Community Center, 105 W. Broad St. The meeting includes a short business session and a program.

TOPS is a nonprofit weight loss support group for men and women of all ages. For more information, stop by a meeting or call Nancy Barron at (570) 668-4651 or Bernie Kunkel at (570) 645-7702. Information is also available on the Web at TOPS.org.

Anyone interested in learning more may attend the meeting without obligation.

Play tryouts

Tryouts for the Jim Thorpe Drama Club production of "West Side Story" will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. in the high school. Parts are open to ages 13 and up. Adults are also welcome. The production under the direction of Natalie Kmetz, will be held on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1, at the school. For more information contact Mrs. Kmetz at (570) 325-4923.

Summit Hill food pantry

The Summit Hill Food Pantry schedule for January is as follows. The packing date is Thursday, Jan. 21 at 9 a.m.

The distribution date is Tuesday, Jan. 26. Doors open at 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Senior commodity boxes arrive on Thursday, Jan. 28, weather permitting. Recipients will be called.

The pantry is always in need of younger volunteers as most of the packers are age 75 and older.

Historical society

The Eldred Township Historical Society will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Eldred Twp. municipal building in Kunkletown. It is "Wedding Sharing Night." Everyone attending should bring in wedding photos, gowns, memorabilia, etc. of your own, parents, grandparents or anything that is wedding related.

If you've been wondering what the society is all about, come out and visit. They're always looking for new members.

Christmas trees

The Borough of Tamaqua's Street Department will be collecting discarded Christmas trees throughout January. Residents are to place their trees curbside on their regular trash collection days. Trees will be collected as time and weather permit.

Trees must be free of all tinsel and decorations. Residents are also asked to remove any plastic bags from the trees. Trees may also be dropped off behind the Tamaqua Borough Garage, at 421 rear E. Broad St.

No trees will be collected after Jan. 31.

WP softball

The West Penn Girls Softball organization will be accepting applications for the coming season on Feb. 6 and Feb. 13. Registrations will be held at the West Penn Municipal Building, both dates, from 9 a.m. - noon. The league is open to all girls between the ages of 5 and 14.

Lansford

Food pantry

The Lansford Food Pantry will be held on Jan. 18 at St. Katherine of Drexel's Church gymnasium from 9:30-11 a.m. The pantry is a nonprofit organization that serves the residents of Lansford on the third Monday of every month.
