The Jim Thorpe Olympian Touchdown Club will meet this evening, Monday, at 6 p.m. in the commons area of the high school. Parents, guardians, relatives and friends of the Jim Thorpe football participants are invited to attend the monthly meetings and help in any with upcoming events of the club.

Members of the Phoenix Fire Company, will meet on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at the company headquarters.

Summit Hill

Presbyterian church

The Hope of Christ Presbyterian Church, Summit Hill, has announced its service schedule for the Easter observance as follows:

Palm/Passion Sunday, April 17 - worship will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Maundy Thursday, April 21 - Communion service will be held at 7 p.m.

Good Friday, April 22 - the community service will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Easter Sunday April 24 - sunrise service will be held at 6:45 a.m. in Memorial Park, followed by the traditional Easter worship service at 10:30 a.m.

The Jim Thorpe Fire Department has free smoke detectors for Jim Thorpe Borough Residents. If you need a smoke detector please contact Fire Chief Bill Diehm at (570) 325-3890. No commercial properties please.

Kindergarten news

The Tamaqua Area School District will have a make up day for kindergarten registration for the 2011-2012 school year. The district is offering this opportunity to parents/guardians of kindergarten age children who missed the March session.

The make up day will be held May 24. To schedule an appointment, call (570) 668-3306, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-2:30 p.m.

DARE graduation

DARE graduation will be held April 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held in the Tamaqua Middle School Auditorium.

Lenten service

The next Lenten service will be on Wednesday, April 13 at Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kresgeville. Guest preacher will be Pastor Sharon Temple. Soup and sandwich hour will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the service will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. Wear your Easter bonnet. There will be Easter eggs and cupcakes. Bring a bag lunch. They will be playing bingo.

Coaldale Borough will have its annual Spring Cleanup Day on Tuesday, April 19.

Large items will be picked up including washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators, limit of five tires, tire rims. All items must have all chemicals removed and doors taken off.

In addition up to 10 bags of garbage will be collected.

Blood drive

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile held March 30 collected a total of 49 units of the "gift of life," held at the Tamaqua Salvation Army Center on West Broad Street.

Multi-gallon pins were awarded to Wendy Shlanta, two gallons, and Carl Heisler, 10 gallons.

Volunteers included Jack Quinn, Bob Zeplin, Jack Rarick, Joe Rimm, Randy Gormley, Bob and Dolly Shirey, Ardis Gerhard, Edie Hoffman and Robert and Darlene Zeckman.

This visit was sponsored by Bowe, Lisella and Bowe, attorneys at law.

Senior center

In addition to the previous stated activities, the Panther Valley Senior Center continues its days from April 18 with penny game at 11 a.m. On April 19 is bowling, and a van trip after lunch; April 20 is pay bingo at 11 a.m.; April 21 everyone will color Easter eggs at 11 a.m.; April 22 the center will be closed for Good Friday.
