First Steps

First Steps, a support group for mothers, will have its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 4, at the Primitive Methodist Church, 55 Hunter St., Tamaqua.

The meeting will be held in the church social room from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to make decorative candle holders.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Child care for all ages will be provided free of charge. New members and volunteers are welcome.

Benefit Festival

The Duane J. Lucien Scholarship Foundation will hold it's annual Benefit Festival Saturday, May 21 from noon to 8 p.m. at the covered bridge along the Slate Heritage Trail, just off 7th Street in Slatington.

The fundraiser benefits the community by providing college scholarships to Northern Lehigh High School seniors.

Class of 1943

The Tamaqua High School Class of 1943 is planning a 68-year anniversary reunion for this summer. The event will be held June 18 at the Owl Creek Reservoir and will include a picnic style luncheon.

Pool passes

Applications are now available for season passes to the H.D. Buehler Memorial (Bungalow) Pool. Opening day will be June 4, at 11:30 a.m. No season or daily passes will be available that day.

The parents of the JROTC will meet on Monday, May 16 at 6 p.m. in the JROTC classroom. All parents are invited.

The Panther Valley High School's JROTC Awards Night will be held on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the PVHS.

Rotary speakers

The West End Rotary Club will host the following speakers in the next two weeks.

Joseph McDonald, candidate for judge, Court of Common Pleas, will speak on Thursday, April 28; Sheriff Todd Martin, Pam Formica and Maida Malone, will speak about the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society on Thursday, May 5.

Four new members recently joined the club. Inducted by President Karin Breitlauch were: Janet Fisher, service/sales heating and air conditioning; Brandie Belanger, attorney; David O'Neill, marketing consultant; and Ed Gallagher, computer technician.

Lehighton Area Council meets

The Lehighton Area Council of the Carbon County Chamber of Commerce will host its bimonthly meeting on Tuesday, May 10, at Platz's Restaurant, 101 Harrity Road, Lehighton. Mixer begins at 5:30 p.m. with the meal at 6 p.m. RSVP by May 6.

Joe Paretta, a Jim Thorpe resident, who has written a book entitled "Master The Card: Say Good Bye to Credit Card Debt," will speak about simple ways to change your credit card debt, change your thinking about credit card debt and help you get out from under it.

Summit Hill

Veterans' photos

In conjunction with Memorial Day, the Summit Hill Historical Society will again be putting veterans' pictures on display in its museum window. The photographs should be framed and labeled with the veteran's name and years of service on them, and can contain any other pertinent information about the serviceman/woman's service. Persons donating the photographs for use should put their telephone number on the backs of the frames so that they can be promptly returned.

The Mahoning Lions Egg hunt will be held tonight due to the rainy weather over the weekend. It will take place at 6 p.m. at the Mahoning Valley Ambulance on Mill Road. It is open to children 10 and under.

WP softball

The West Penn Athletic/Softball Association will host the Aquafina Pitch Hit and Run Competition on April 30 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the West Penn Park.

The competition is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 7-14. Participation is free and birth certificates are required for proof of age.

Dog walk

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue group will host its Fourth Annual Dog Walk on May 7, following along the Schuylkill Valley Heritage Trail.
