Fire company meeting

Members of the Phoenix Fire Company will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. at the company headquarters. Nomination of officers will take place at this meeting.


The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be stationed at Memorial Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 20, from 1-6 p.m. Donors should be 17 years of age and older.

The parents of the Panther Valley Class of 2011 will meet at the high school at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 13 to discuss plans for the All Night Party.


Borough meetings

Lansford Borough Council has two meetings scheduled for next week.

The council's Facility Planning Committee wuill meet on Monday, Oct. 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the borough office, 26 E. Patterson St..

Halloween party

The children's Halloween party will be on held on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Nesquehoning Recreation Center. Children must be 10 years old or younger and must be a resident of Nesquehoning. A sign up sheet is at the recreation center (during Wednesday bingo 5 p.m.-10 p.m.). Deadline is Oct. 22.

Summit Hill

Heritage center

The Summit Hill Heritage Center, formerly St. Paul United Church of Christ, is in need of several "wish list" items.

They include plastic cutting boards (medium size), dish towels, dish cloths, shovels, brooms, a ladder, a mat for the narthex and a computer, printer and copier.

Anyone interested in donating any of these items is asked to contact Deb Ranck, 717-787-3672.

St. Paul Lutheran Church, Summit Hill, will hold a church council meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in the church.

Franklin Township

Garbage collection date change

Franklin Township will change the date of garbage collection due to the Columbus holiday.

Monday, Oct. 11, pickup will be collected on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

Trick or Treat night

Trick or treat night in Franklin Township will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27.

Fairview Seniors

Fairview Seniors meet every second and fourth Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Chestnuthill Park Building. Members make special items for patients both young and old.

At the next meeting a visual aid speaker will be featured.

The Western Pocono Women's Club will be celebrating 40 years of service to the community in 2011. Presently the club has 48 members, including five of the charter members who are still active in the club.

Walking group

Members of Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church are walking to Bethlehem, Christ's birthplace, from Kresgeville. They started in July and will arrive in Bethlehem in December, in time for Christmas. Starting Monday's, the Walking Group will meet at 5:30 p.m. (call Karinsue for place at (570) 722-3630).

It's free and all ages welcome.

Fall cleanup

Coaldale borough officials have announced that the town's annual fall cleanup will be held Tuesday, Oct. 19. Refuse will be picked up throughout Coaldale. Items to be picked up include tires, no more than five, tire rims, auto body parts, refrigerators, freezers, vending machines, dehumidifiers, water coolers, heat pumps, washers, dryers and stoves. All items must have chemicals removed from them and their doors taken off. In addition, up to 10 bags of garbage will be collected.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Sept. 28 at Ryan Township Fire Company, Barnesville, with 41 members in attendance. President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation.

Reports were presented by treasurer Shirley Becker and President Schmerfeld, who provided the secretary's report. Birthday wishes were extended to Betty Brobst. A thank you card was received from Jean Machamer.

Summit Hill

Shade Tree Commission

The Summit Hill Shade Tree Commission will conduct its annual fall street planting on Oct. 28-29. Any resident or business who would like a tree planted in front of their property can contact Lou Vermillion, (570) 645-9772, or John Kupec, 645-9644. Trees will be ordered in the near future. Volunteers to help with the plantings, watering and care of the trees are welcome.
