St. Matthew's Youth Group

St. Matthew's Youth Group will meet every Friday from 5-7:30 p.m. for ages 12-18. Dinner and fun will be served.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. Bring a bag lunch and they will be playing bingo.

Family Fun Night

Pleasant Valley Elementary will have a family fun night on Friday, Jan. 24 from 6-8 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All students of PVE and their families are welcome to attend.

Pleasant Valley Intermediate School will be having its monthly PAC meeting on Monday, Jan 24 at 1:15 p.m. in the school library. All are encouraged and welcome to attend.

Rush-Ryan seniors

The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Jan. 11 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 39 members in attendance.

President Eleanor Schmerfeld conducted the business meeting. Chaplain Kathleen Valentine offered an invocation. Reports were presented by secretary Florina Martin and treasurer Shirley Becker.

Birthday wishes were extended to Betty Kunkel, Doris Yeager, Gloria McHale and Gene Lutz. Yeager was also congratulated on her 48th wedding anniversary. Rhoda Purnell was added to the sick list.

Catholic Schools

Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5 by Our Lady of the Valley School, Lansford, which serves the communities of Summit Hill, Lansford, Nesquehoning and Coaldale. The event will begin with Parishioner Appreciation Day on Sunday, Jan. 30, which will include an open house program from noon to 2 p.m. at the school. Additional information about CSW will be announced in this column at a later date.

Meeting site change

Members and friends of the Western Pocono Lions Club are reminded that the club will meet at Cherry's Family Restaurant in Kresgeville this week. Although the site is changed for this month, the time is still 6:30 p.m. for the social gathering and 7 o'clock for the meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

The speaker will be Cory Bentzoni from the PA Game Commission.

Northern Lehigh Future Focus

Northern Lehigh Future Focus in planning on publishing a photo-book on Slatington/Northern Lehigh sports teams and players later this year and is in search of photographs and help with a new sports book.

As this is expected to be a large undertaking, NLFF is asking for the public's help. First and foremost, they are looking for old photos or copies of photos that they can borrow.

Nutrition Education Classes

Adele Argot, a nutrition education adviser with the Monroe County Extension office, is interested in holding a basis nutrition education class in Palmerton, as was held last year at Holy Trinity Church. The program is designed to help families and individuals with low incomes stretch their food dollars to achieve a healthy diet.

Families with young children learned tips on food preparation, meal planning, food storage and sanitation, shopping skills, nutrition for family members and managing a healthy weight.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The VFW Ladies Auxiliary meeting of Jan. 11 was canceled due to inclement weather and lack of a quorum. It will not be rescheduled.

All members who have not yet paid their 2011 dues are reminded they are now delinquent. Dues should be paid as soon as possible.

The next regular meeting will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 8, weather permitting, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the post home.
