Benefit Festival

The Duane J. Lucien Scholarship Foundation will hold it's annual Benefit Festival Saturday, May 21 from noon to 8 p.m. at the covered bridge along the Slate Heritage Trail, just off 7th Street in Slatington.

The fundraiser benefits the community by providing college scholarships to Northern Lehigh High School seniors.

Newspaper drive

The men and boys of St. John's Lutheran Church will hold their monthly newspaper drive on Saturday, May 7. There will be one sweep of the Palmerton, Aquashicola, and Little Gap areas beginning at 8 a.m.

Papers should be bundled and placed within sight of the collectors. They are collecting papers only; the shiny inserts are acceptable. They also need grocery size brown paper bags.

Lioness generosity

The Western Pocono Lioness Club accepted two new members recently, Joan Hoffman and MaryAnn LaLumina and also held election of officers.

During the meeting reports were given on the upcoming fall luncheon and fashion show, the recent Holistic Fair and discussion took place about next year's event.

The Lioness Spring Rally, scheduled for 6 p.m. May 12 at JD Citros in Lehighton was also announced.

The club also donated $100 to West End Mission and $1,000 to the West End Ecumenical Network.

Family Movie and Dinner Night

Norm and Amy Burger invite all community youths and their families to a Family Movie and Dinner Night at St. Matthew's UCC in Kunkletown to begin at 5 p.m.

If you are in fifth grade and up, you are welcome to join in the fun.

YMCA Open House at Eldred Elementary

The Pocono Family YMCA will be holding a grand opening at its new West End Extension Site on Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Eldred Elementary in Kunkletown.

The public is invited to join them.

Summit Hill

Methodist Charge

The service schedule for the Coaldale/Summit Hill United Methodist Charge for Sunday, May 1, is as follows:

Worship services will be held at 9 a.m. in the Summit Hill United Methodist Church and at 11 a.m. in the Coaldale United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Burgess Gordon will officiate at both services. The adult Sunday school will meet at 9:45 a.m. in the Coaldale church.

First Steps

First Steps, a support group for mothers, will have its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 4, at the Primitive Methodist Church, 55 Hunter St., Tamaqua.

The meeting will be held in the church social room from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Participants will learn how to make decorative candle holders.

The sessions are free and open to the public. Child care for all ages will be provided free of charge. New members and volunteers are welcome.

Class of 1943

The Tamaqua High School Class of 1943 is planning a 68-year anniversary reunion for this summer. The event will be held June 18 at the Owl Creek Reservoir and will include a picnic style luncheon.

Pool passes

Applications are now available for season passes to the H.D. Buehler Memorial (Bungalow) Pool. Opening day will be June 4, at 11:30 a.m. No season or daily passes will be available that day.

The Panther Valley High School's JROTC Awards Night will be held on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the PVHS.

The Palmerton Hospital Auxiliary is currently holding a membership drive. Those interested in becoming a member, may join them for tea on Tuesday, May 3, at 2 p.m. in the third floor conference room of the hospital.
