More air, water pollution

To the editor:

Whatever their reasons for voting for Donald Trump in November, it is unlikely his supporters voted for more-polluted air, poisonous water, and pollution in our national parks. But that's what they may get.President Trump is now proposing a 25 percent reduction in the EPA's budget, eliminating nearly 3,000 jobs and many long-successful programs. Funding for the cleanup of lead, marine pollution, tribal lands and the Great Lakes faces severe cuts, while initiatives to combat climate disruption will be hit with a 70 percent reduction.Scott Pruitt, the new EPA administrator, spent his years as Oklahoma attorney general bringing lawsuits against the EPA at the behest of the oil, gas and coal industries. He intends to gut the Clean Water Act, which has protected our tapwater and waterways for over 40 years, and opposes clean air and water protections for our National Parks.A Trump goal is to eliminate EPA's environmental justice program, which seeks to remedy years of planning decisions and lack of protections that led to black children being twice as likely to have asthma as white children.Nearly half of Latino children live in counties that do not meet national air quality standards. Such environmental injustice was starkly demonstrated in Flint, Michigan, where lead-poisoned drinking water ravaged a mostly black city.If that wasn't what you voted for, please call Congressmen Dent or Cartwright and Sens. Casey and Toomey: Ask them to vote to preserve EPA funding because you still want clean air, clean water, and pristine national parks.Donald W. MilesChair, Lehigh Valley Sierra ClubBethlehem
