Berlitz sets record

OREFIELD - Even though many of the local swimmers don't have high school teams to compete with, they put on a strong showing at the District 11 Swimming Championships at Parkland High School.

Danny Berlitz of Marian Catholic broke a District 11 record for the second straight day. Friday, he broke his previous record in the 200 IM, and on Saturday, broke a friend's record in the 500 freestyle.Berlitz turned in a time of 4:35.82, besting the old mark of 4:39.04 turned in by Trey Shackleton of Northwestern three years ago."Trey is a really good friend of mine and I talk to him all the time, he's a really good kid. It's cool beating his record," laughed Berlitz. "I haven't texted him yet, but it's going to happen."Schoolmate Katie Kurzinsky won the 100 backstroke, just ahead of Tamaqua's Lexi Kerstetter. While Kerstetter didn't win the district event, she did reset her school record, with a time of 1:01.74, marking somewhat of a comeback for the junior swimmer who spent some time in the hospital recently."I felt great about the race and I broke my school record, so it felt good. I had pneumonia before leagues, so I had to come back and work hard and it paid off in districts," said Kerstetter, who felt she had a shot at breaking the mark coming into districts."My coach pushed me really hard and all of my whole team pushed me a lot, so I felt that I had a really good chance," Kerstetter said. The battles between Kurzinsky and Kerstetter in districts will come to an end with the graduation of Kurzinsky, who will be attending Ursinus College. That exit leaves Kerstetter as the heir apparent to the district backstroke title next season, which she plans on seizing."Katie pushed me the past two years and I'm ready to take the district championship next year. I'm glad to see her going to college and I wish her all luck," said Kerstetter with a smile.Although only the event winner automatically qualifies for the state meet, other swimmers can earn at large berths based on times. A pair of area swimmers in the girls 100 backstroke got good news on Sunday when the PIAA released the fields for the March 15-16 state championship meet.Tamaqua's Rebecca Kanaskie and Marian's Angelina Krupko finished in second and third place respectively in the 100 breast stroke with times good enough to advance to states."I am really proud of myself, I worked really hard this year," said Kanaskie. "I just wanted to do something that I could look back on and say 'I didn't throw it away, I didn't give it up.' I went out there and I did all that I could do and my time was amazing."The Tamaqua girls team has just seven members, all of whom were in districts. Despite the small size of their team, the Tamaqua girls finished fifth in the team event, which was won by Allentown Central Catholic.Kanaskie was happy not only with her accomplishments, but with those of her teammates as well."For having only seven girls on the team, it's amazing, because we had so many people on the podium and we've had so many amazing swims," said Kanaskie. "I always say, 'you don't need 20 girls on your team, you can be good no matter what you do,' and I hope I made a good impression on these girls. I'm going to miss them."Another area swimmer who earned an at large berth into the state meet was Northern Lehigh's Wyatt Delans, who placed third in the 100 breaststroke."I feel I did pretty well today, I dropped from my overall best, which is pretty good. I wish I would have been a little faster, but you can't do everything," said Delans. "I thought I had a shot at gold, because my seed time wasn't actually my best time, so I thought I could maybe slide in, but not this time."STATE BOUND ... Marian's Tim Dando joined Kanaskie, Krupko and Delans as area swimmers who had some axious moments waiting to see if his time was good enough to qualify for states. Dando had an extra 24 hours to wait since his event was on Friday, but the wait was worth it as he qualified in the 200 freestyle.TEAM CHAMPS ... Allentown Central Catholic took the team titles on both the boys and girls sides. Tamaqua's boys team finished eighth in the competition.District 11 Day 2 Results(top 4 plus locals)Girls100 Freestyle - 1. Kyra Manson (Moravian Academy) 52.82, 2.
