Lansford police officer injured

A Lansford police officer was injured in a three-vehicle crash that was reported at 3:10 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Springgarden (Route 902) and Patterson Street (Route 209) in the borough.

According to police, Stewart Counterman of Coaldale was descending Route 902 from Summit Hill when he said his brakes failed or were not operating. He was unable to stop, with his Oldsmobile traveling through the intersection at Bertsch Street.He then avoided vehicles stopped for a red traffic signal at Springgarden and Patterson streets by partially riding on the sidewalk.He traveled into the intersection, where his vehicle struck a Jeep driven by Shawn M. Nunemacher, the Lansford police officer, who was on duty but in his private vehicle. His vehicle was pushed into another car driven by Eugene Turner, of Summit Hill, who was stopped westbound attempting a left turn onto Springgarden from Patterson.Nunemacher was injured and taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital — Cedar Crest, with injuries to the head, neck and face. Nunemacher had just left the borough police station after he had executed a search warrant earlier. As a result of that search he returned to the police station to prepare new charges and was en route to the district judge’s office to file those charges when the crash occurred.Counterman was not injured, but his passenger Roxanne, was taken to St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale, for treatment. She was confined in the car and had to be extricated by fire personnel. An infant was in the rear seat, properly secured in a child safety seat. The infant was also taken to St. Luke’s for observation. Turner was also not injured.Lansford police were assisted by Summit Hill police also by volunteers from the Lansford Fire Company and fire police, fire police from Summit Hill and the Lehighton EMS unit. The roadway was shutdown for an extended period of time due to the crash and investigation.Police said the investigation is continuing.
