Slatington council president quits

Gwyneth Jones has resigned from Slatington Borough Council after a move to replace her as president in the middle of the meeting Monday night.

Jones submitted a letter of resignation to solicitor Tom Anewalt on Monday night following a 4-3 vote for Councilman David Schnaars to take over the presidency.Jones had been appointed board president during January's reorganization meeting. Joe Wechsler was appointed vice president and Bryon Reed remained president pro tem. After tackling half of the night's agenda, newest council member, Mel Gildner, made the motion to switch Schnaars with Jones.Gildner joined the board last month after he had been the only resident to express interest in the council seat vacated by Robert Steets at the beginning of 2017."The president serves at the pleasure of council. You can make a change with a simple majority," Anewalt said."You would want to have someone specific to replace her," Anewalt said.Gildner then nominated Schnaars with Wechsler seconding the motion.Schnaars, Gildner, Wechsler and Jon Rinker voted in favor of Schnaars' appointment while Jones, Reed and Michael Brogan opposed the change."Some councilman didn't feel she was keeping the meeting moving smoothly," Brogan said."Gwyn was a little hothead at times but her intentions were always good and she always looked out for the community," he said of his vote in favor of Jones."I hope Councilman Schnaars becomes a good president."Scott Barhight, a borough resident of over 12 years, spoke during public comment to show his gratitude for Jones."I just want to thank Gwyn for her hard work. Many of us appreciated your efforts," he said.Schnaars' tenure will take effect at the beginning of March's meeting."I'm hoping we can all work together toward better things," said Borough Manager Judith Danko."It's unfortunate to have these things happen. It's upsetting," she said."We just need to move forward on a positive note and make Slatington a better place to live."Code officersBorough zoning/building code official Duane Dellecker and newly hired code enforcement officer Clark Ritter both submitted resignation letters to the board Monday night. Before Danko's hiring, Dellecker served as borough office manager for several years. The board made a motion to allow Danko to receive price quotes and background information on zoning/building code enforcement companies to work with in Slatington."Obviously you want to expedite this as soon as possible. You don't want to be without an enforcement officer," Anewalt said."We're in need of a company as soon as possible. We're going to need a special meeting within the next week," Danko said. The borough police force will continue issuing parking tickets while the search for the company continues. The board had terminated longtime parking ticket enforcement officer Linda Nails in January, due to "budget eliminations," Anewalt said."For the past 15 years, I have served the residents of the borough of Slatington as zoning and building code official," Dellecker said."At this stage in my life, respect and appreciation are fundamental elements that must be present in my work. Due to circumstances that have been building for the last six months or so, I felt it was in my best interest to tender this resignation," Dellecker said in an issued statement.Dellecker said, "Residents will probably encounter substantial delays in getting questions answered or obtaining permits."A special meeting to hire a company was set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the borough hall.
