Man just clowning around

Schuylkill County commissioners spent some time Wednesday clowning around.

With Splash the clown at their side, commissioners proclaimed Aug. 1-7 National Clown Week.Splash is the persona of John C. Sullivan of Pottsville, who has been clowning for about 17 years.National Clown Week was first proclaimed by then President Richard M. Nixon in 1971."With their baggy trousers, oversized shoes, red bulb noses and silly antics, clowns lessen pain and sadness by providing laughter to children's hospitals, nursing homes and everyone whose lives they touch," the proclamation states.It's an appropriate week to be clowning around, with the Schuylkill County Fair underway.The fair offers daily entertainment and exhibits. Tonight Shawn Klush will be doing an ultimate Elvis tribute with shows at 7 and 9 p.m.Nashville recording artist Parmalee will be on stage at 9 p.m. Friday. Jesse Wade will perform at 7 p.m.The Mahoney Brothers will be on stage at 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday.Daily entertainment includes Muttville Comix, Peggy Hentz Red Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Schuylkill Talent Showcase, Porcupine Pat, The Art's Barn Education Center, chain saw artist, fly tying, tractor parade and Farming for a Day.The fairgrounds are located at 2270 Fair Road, Summit Station.
