Blue Bombers comeback sinks Moravian

Palmerton head baseball coach Mike Svetik tried to rest some of his key players Friday against Moravian Academy.

Having already played three games in five days, and having another one scheduled Saturday, he was hoping to give his regulars a break. The move would also allow others on the roster to get some valuable playing time. The move almost backfired, but thanks to some senior leadership and some timely hits the Blue Bombers came back from a four-run deficit to gain a 13-5 Colonial League win over the Lions."Obviously, a lot of people were probably saying, 'What's coach doing?,'" Svetik said. "These kids practice. They play hard. They deserve a chance. So, we gave them a chance. It got to be 4-0 so I had to make the change. I tried to rest players since we have a game (today). That was my thought process."If I had to do it all over again, I would, because these kids have to learn how to go out there and play. They're here too. They put the time and effort in just like everyone else."Garrett Perschy served as the designated hitter and Tekoah Guedes, Zach Silfies, Jake Taschler, Tanner Burnett and Jared Mooney all watched from the bench for the first three innings. But they soon found themselves back in action."We got them together and we said, 'We're not losing this game. We're here to play,'" said Perschy."We just had to chip away. We didn't need a huge inning right away. That's what we did, and we got back in the game."After Mooney and his defense had a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth, he let his bat do the talking with a two-run single, which pulled the Bombers within two runs.Although the Lions tallied another run in the top of the fifth, the Bombers came back with two in the bottom half. Guedes, who singled, scored on a throwing error and Taschler's infield hit plated Perschy. In the sixth, hits by Mooney and Guedes and a walk to Ben Serfass loaded the bases. Perschy then drilled a two-run single to left to give the Bombers a 6-5 lead.Brody Boehler and Mooney later delivered RBI singles, and Taschler knocked in a run with a fielder's choice. Guedes put the exclamation point on a nine-run sixth frame with a two-run single.Mooney retired Moravian in order in the seventh on just 12 pitches to complete the victory."I just wanted to show them what we had to do to win this game," said Mooney, who earned the win and led the Bombers offensively with three hits. "I got the first hit that got us started, and then I came in and pitched and did what I had to do out there on the mound."I just tried to do my job when coach put me out there."While Svetik was pleased with the win, he also took pride in his team's leaders."That's what you want to see from your seniors (Mooney, Perschy and Ian Silfies)," Svetik said. "These kids were a big part of our championship run last year. They're bringing that this year to this team and that's what it's all about. That's how you keep a program going. You just have kids pass on the torch."Hopefully these younger kids will see that and keep plugging away."BOMB SQUAD … Three Bombers accounted for eight of their 13 hits. Mooney paced the attack with a 3-for-3 day. He scored two runs and had three RBIs. Guedes (three singles, two runs, two RBIs) and Serfass (two singles, two runs) contributed with multiple hits.ON A ROLL … The come-from-behind win gives the Bombers a five-game winning streak.
