Lehigh Valley struggles continue against Pens

You can get a lot accomplished in three-hours, 35-minutes and 38-seconds. One thing that the Lehigh Valley Phantoms haven't been able to do in that amount of time is score a goal against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Their division rivals to the north have held the Phantoms scoreless in each of the last three games, and over half of the game prior to that at a crucial point in the season. The three shutouts are the only times this season that Lehigh Valley has been blanked. In the latest outing, Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry had to stop just 21 shots to pick up the shutout win. Prior to that, backup goaltender Casey DeSmith stopped 26 shots, and in the first shutout game of the streak, Jarry turned away 35 shots. Prior to that game was a 3-2 Phantoms win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, but all of their goals came early in the contest. The normally high-powered Phantoms offense is in a six-game streak that has seen them score just 11 goals during that span of games, in which they've gone 2-3-1-0.With the vast majority of their games against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton coming late in the season, the Phantoms had hoped to not just make the playoffs, but to unseat the Pens at the top of the Atlantic Division. Since the All-Star Break, Lehigh Valley has gone 2-6-1-0 against the Penguins."It's definitely frustrating, especially when you're playing a team that you're fighting in the division, especially a rival like Wilkes-Barre. You want to give a little better effort than we did tonight, so it's definitely a little disappointing," said Phantoms center Corban Knight after the most recent setback at the hands of the Penguins.Instead of trying to steal the division from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, their futility against their rivals has left the Phantoms fighting to remain as the division's second seed in the playoffs. Coming into their final three games, the Phantoms are tied for second with Providence, and are two points ahead of fourth-place Hershey. Lehigh Valley plays at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tomorrow before hosting Providence in the final home game of the season Friday night. After that, they wrap up the season at Binghamton Saturday night."The clock's ticking pretty quick here, and with how tight our division is, you want to lock up a spot [in the playoffs] as soon as you can," explained Knight. "As tough as the loss was tonight, we've got to shift our focus to tomorrow and win that one and then stay focused."With the Phantoms needing just a tie or an overtime loss to clinch a playoff spot, it's not likely that their playoff lives are in jeopardy, but having home ice advantage for at least the first round would slip away if they don't finish in second place in the division. Lehigh Valley is 22-11-4-0 at home this season, but the four other potential division playoff teams all have even better home records, making home ice an important factor in the postseason.MR. ALL-STAR ... Phantoms defenseman T.J. Brennan was the lone representative of the team on the AHL First All-Star Team for the season. The award is the third of Brennan's career, and his second straight inclusion on the team. The 28-year-old from Moorestown, New Jersey is currently third in the league among defenders in scoring, with 55 points (20 goals, 35 assists).LET'S SEE WHAT HAPPENS ... In the game against the Penguins, Brennan delayed moving into position for a faceoff. The ref asked what was up and Brennan explained that he wanted to see what was going to happen with a marriage proposal that was taking place in the stands. "I was like, 'I'm into this right now and I think everyone else was,'" laughed Brennan. "I take my job very seriously, but that moment was more attractive at the time, so congratulations to whoever that was. In the big scheme of things, it was more important that that guy had his moment."BACK HOME AGAIN ... Goalie Anthony Stolarz and defenseman Robert Hagg were returned to the Phantoms from the Flyers on Monday. Hagg made his NHL debut with the Flyers on Sunday against Carolina.
