Carl and Jean Hafer

Carl and Jean Hafer of Tamaqua, celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Aug. 15.

Mrs. Hafer is the daughter of the late Nellie Gallagher Fisher and Oswald Fisher of Tamaqua. She attended St. Jerome's School and belonged to the CWEA when it was active. She also was a Cub Scout den mother for 18 years.Mr. Hafer graduated from Tamaqua Area High School in 1940 and served in the U.S. Navy of World War II. He retired from AT&T in Allentown in 1985. He served as a leader in many capacities, including Boy Scouts of America for 25 years; past Grand Knight and honorary life member of Father Henry Baker Council 2711; and past faithful navigator and honorary life member of Schuylkill Assembly, Pottsville Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree.He is also a Tamaqua senior citizens life member of South Ward Fire Company, as well as a member of Navy Club U.S. Ship 257, Minersville; plank member U.S. Navy Memorial; plank and life member of Sampson World War II Navy Veterans American Legion Post 173; life member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and life member of Telephone Pioneers of America.The couple belong to St. John XXIII, formerly St. Jerome's Church, where they both are Eucharistic ministers. They also still reside in the home where Carl was born nearly 94 years ago.They have a daughter, Ester Jean, wife of Stanley Borascius of Schnecksville; three sons, J. Teddy Hafer of Lake Wynona, Gregory of Pottsville and the late J. Carl Hafer Jr.They also have 10 grandchildren, Robert Borascius of Schnecksville, Joseph Hafer of Longmont, Colorado; Lance Hafer of Delaware; Dean Hafer, Longmont, Colorado; Bernadette Trostle of Auburn; Brandon Hafer of Chesapeake, Virginia; Alex Hafer of Grand Junction, Colorado; and the late Scot Borascius, Stanley Borascius and John C. Hafer III; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.The family celebrated Carl and Jean's anniversary with a dinner at La Dolce Casa in Tamaqua.
