Mahanoy Area routs Panther Vy.

When it rains, it pours.

Last night Panther Valley and Mahanoy Area played in a wind-driven rainstorm. The Panthers could not match up with the power rushing of the Golden Bears, losing a Schuylkill Football League contest, 43-0.Two of PV's key offensive starters were out for violating team rules. The Panthers were depleted in the backfield, starting wide receiver, Danny Gilberry at quarterback. He was able to spearhead a few drives, but the furthest the Panthers traveled to was the Bears 26 yard-line late in the second quarter.Meanwhile, both Mahanoy quarterback Matt Lewandowski and tailback Tyler Clewell ripped off chunks of yards on almost every carry. The Bears rushed for 446 yards in the game. Lewandowski totaled 129 of them with three scores."Our goal tonight was to play mistake-free football," said Mahanoy head coach, Dave Holman, whose team improved its record to 4-5 on the season. "We focused on fundamentals and we did what we did best, and that's run the football."Mahanoy took the opening kick off and drove 85 yards in five plays to begin their onslaught. The Panthers moved the ball efficiently on the ensuing drive, but the Bears' Danny Lawrence intercepted a PV pass around midfield.Panther Valley (2-7) then forced a Mahanoy (4-5) punt, but immediately went three-and-out. The Bears struck right back on an eight-play, 79-yard TD drive, capped by Lewandowski's second score of the game.Another short Panther drive ended in a fumble recovered by Mahanoy's Mark Lawrence at the PV 47 yard-line. Five plays later, and Mahanoy had increased its lead to 21-0 going into the half."Hats off to Mahanoy. They needed to secure a playoff spot and they really took it to us," said Panthers' coach Matt Davis. "Beginning the game without two of our key players certainly affected us, but give them the credit. When they didn't need to throw a pass in the whole game, that tells you how much they dominated."The second half was more of the first, with Lewandowski and Clewell marching up and down the field to add 26 more points to the Bears' total."All we can do now is rally the troops for our last game next week," said Davis. "We just have to go all out with everything we got for our seniors, who will be playing their last game for Panther Valley."PUNT PICK UP... In the first quarter, a Bears punt came to rest on the Panther's 14 yard-line. When Mahanoy's downfield pursuit stopped, thinking the play was dead, PV's Danny Gilberry alertly picked up the ball and ran 38 yards to the Bears' 48.JACK OF ALL TRADES... Gilberry started the game as the Panthers' quarterback. In the second half, he played running back. He also punted, returned a punt, and made tackles from his cornerback position on defense.
