Palmerton Memorial day events

The Palmerton United Veterans Organization's Memorial Day activities will begin with cemetery services on Saturday and conclude with a parade and Remembrance Service on Monday.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, the UVO will begin cemetery services at the Towamensing Cemetery. From there, they will travel to the monument at Palmerton Memorial Park, which was built as a lasting tribute to veterans. Other cemeteries to be visited: Little White Church on Third Street; St. John's Towamensing Church Cemetery, including St. Vladimir's upper and lower cemeteries; Bowmanstown Cemetery; Sacred Heart Cemetery on Stony Ridge Road; and Trachsville Cemetery at Jerusalem UCC/Lutheran Church. There will be a short service at each.Exact times for the individual cemetery visits are not available, as travel times are impossible to predict. The Memorial Day parade starts at 10 a.m. at Second Street and Delaware Avenue. The line of march will proceed down Delaware to Fifth Street, to Franklin Avenue to Palmerton Borough Park, where services will be at 11 a.m. In case of rain, services will be held in the S.S. Palmer gym at 11 a.m.The parade will feature veterans, the Palmerton High School marching band, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and firetrucks and ambulances with their personnel. This year's Miss Poppy, Paige Cronk, and the Legion Mascot, Noah Sell, will carry wreaths for placement at the monuments at Palmerton Borough Hall and Memorial Park.Paige is the 9-year-old daughter of John and Ann Marie Cronk. The third-grade S.S. Palmer Elementary School student is the granddaughter of Joe and Sue Uhnak of Palmerton and Dave and Pat Cronk of Allentown. Paige will join her grandfather, Joe Uhnak, as an active UVO member participating in the parade and service.Sell is the 10-year-old son of Rob and Holly Sell. The fourth-grade S.S. Palmer Elementary School student is the grandson of Bob and Jenny Sell of Palmerton and Barry and Phyllis Hausman of Walnutport. He sees being selected as the Legion Mascot as an honor "to people like my grandfather, who is a Navy Seabee veteran, and remembers those who died like my Great Uncle Skeeter." (Noah Clifford "Skeeter" Sell was killed in action during Vietnam while serving in the U.S. Army).During the service at the park, there will be poppies for "sale" for any donation. All proceeds will be used for Palmerton UVO projects, such as the July visit of the Vietnam Moving Wall. There will also be Moving Wall T-shirts available.
