Abandoned canoe prompts Lehigh River search

A canoe stuck on rocks along the shore of the Lehigh River prompted a search for possible missing boaters in the Jim Thorpe area Monday morning.

But authorities called off their operation after the owner of the boat came forward and said all of his passengers were accounted for.

The canoe was spotted Monday morning around 9 a.m. near the Route 903 bridge. Members of the Jim Thorpe and Lehighton Fire Departments patrolled up and down river from the site to search for any sign of occupants, Jim Thorpe Fire Chief Bill Diehm said.

A train sitting at Packerton Yards had to be split so crews could access the western shore of the river.

Early in the afternoon, a person was seen trying to move the canoe. Police met with him and identified him as the owner. He said that he and a friend had been canoeing on Sunday when their boat filled with water and became stuck on rocks.
