Truex earns Pocono pole

LONG POND - New Jersey native Martin Truex Jr. who calls Pocono his "hometown track" earned his third pole of the season and his first career pole at Pocono Raceway on Friday.

Truex Jr. will certainly be feeling right at home for Sunday's Pennsylvania 400 (1 p.m. NBC Sports) where he will hope to match the speed his team displayed in practice and qualifying throughout the day on Friday. It seemed like The No. 78 Furniture Row Toyota had top speed as soon as they unloaded the car from the trailer at Pocono. Truex Jr. ran sixth quickest in the early afternoon practice on Friday and followed that up with a second place finish in round one of qualifying, a first place finish in round two, and lastly the Coors Light Pole in the final round.Truex Jr. will start in the top 10 for the 14th time this season and with his win at Pocono in June of last year he is certainly among the favorites to win the race on Sunday."I feel great about our car. This is the kind of track where everything comes into play and obviously this is a really challenging racetrack," said Truex Jr. "You have to have speed here and we've had speed this year so I feel good about our car. We really concentrated on qualifying and made sure that we had a good starting spot for the race on Sunday. I'm proud of our guys for executing our game plan and getting the pole today."Perhaps, the toughest turn at Pocono's "Tricky Triangle" is the tunnel turn, heading into to turn three. Truex Jr. seemed to have the perfect setup on the day for the tunnel turn as that's where he gained the most lap time on the field. If Truex Jr. can be as good through the tunnel turn for Sunday's Pennsylvania 400 it could be a long day for the opposition."The tunnel turn for whatever reason worked out well for us today. I felt really comfortable there today and I got more confident going through as the qualifying rounds went on," said Truex Jr. "I felt way better today than I did last time we were here for the first race of the summer. I was just able to race hard in there in that final round and it paid off. Nine times out of ten taking a risk going in there won't pay off, but today it did."The 2016 Toyota engine power was once again evident with three out of the top four spots belonging to Toyota. Carl Edwards came home with a second place qualifying effort and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin qualified fourth.Edwards was also one of the fastest cars at Pocono since the cars hit the track. He had the fourth best time in practice and didn't drop below the top two in all three qualifying rounds. He will start in the top ten for 16th time this season. It's Edwards 12th top ten start in 24 races at Pocono."When I finished my lap in the last round I really wanted to say something over the radio like "that's the pole" or something along those lines because that's how good I felt about my lap," said Edwards. "So, I'm glad I didn't do it that because obviously our lap wasn't good enough. But we have a very fast race car and all three rounds went well, so I'm really looking forward to the race on Sunday."Paul Menard was the fastest car in practice on Friday and he backed that up with a very impressive third place qualifying effort. Richard Childress Racing put together a pretty solid qualifying performance on the day, which is something RCR has struggled with this season. In fact, this is the first time since the August Michigan race in 2014 that all three RCR cars made it to the final round of qualifying (final 12). Ryan Newman will start sixth and Austin Dillon will roll off in the 12th position.BUSCHS WERE PUSHIN' … It wasn't a great day of qualifying for the Busch brothers. Kyle Busch was one of the fastest cars in practice on Friday, but due to an inspection issue didn't get on track in the first round until under ten minutes left on the clock. Busch made it to the second round, but lost speed in that round, qualifying in the 16th position. Kurt Busch, who won the June race at Pocono also didn't have the same type of speed he showcased just a little over a month ago. Kurt Busch will start 15th.MAGIC BULLET .. As noted, Martin Truex Jr. showed a lot of speed on Friday. It may be because he's driving the car that won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Truex Jr. dominated that race from the time the green flag dropped until the checkered flag waved. Truex Jr. will certainly be looking for the same result on Sunday.
