Anthracite bounces back

SAYLORSBURG - The Deep Run Little League All-Star team got deep-sixed in a 9-10 year-old Section 6 elimination game Wednesday evening.

The Anthracite Coal Barons rebounded from a loss to Lehigh the previous night in impressive fashion, sinking the Thunderhawks 14-4 in four innings of play. The plunge and the splash you heard was the way the Bucks County team went head first into the water and never emerged."That is the way we've played since the tournaments began," brimmed Anthracite manager Ron Hood about a hitting attack, which doused Deep Run early and often. "We have scored runs in bunches, and today we showed that again."The Coal Barons blasted away for 15 hits, including two triples and a double."In eight games before tonight, we had scored 97 runs in districts and sectionals, so I knew we were going to bounce back after scoring just three runs the night before," said Hood.Although Anthracite didn't score in the first inning, it showed signs that its bats were ready to explode as Matt Machalik singled with two outs and Stephen Hood drove a ball to the base of the fence in deep centerfield."It was just a matter of time the way we were swinging the bats that we were going to produce a big inning here and there," said manager Hood. The first of three big innings for Anthracite started in the second when it sent 12 batters to the plate, unleashing eight hits and scoring seven times. The fireworks started calmly with a walk, two fielders' choice ground balls, and Brady Breiner's hustling infield single that loaded the bases. Then the pyrotechnics started to shoot skyward.Chase Weaver picked up the first of his three straight hits with an RBI single. Machalik then singled back through the box for two RBIs. Cody Orsulak unloaded a bomb for a triple, sending three more runners home. Hood followed with an RBI hit before singles by Drew Kokinda and Tyler Black capped the outburst and gave Anthracite a 7-0 lead."We stress hitting the ball back through the middle," said Hood. "We put cones between short and second and you have to hit the ball through those cones, otherwise it's an out (in batting practice). I think you saw that approach pay off with a lot of our hits tonight."The Coal Barons added three more runs in the third, getting singles from AJ. Jewells, Weaver and Kokinda for a 10-0 lead. Even though the Thunderhawks scored four times in the top of the fourth, Anthracite was on a mission to mercy-rule its opponents. It did that in the bottom of the fourth as Chase Krynock drew a one out walk, and Breiner and Weaver both singled to jam the sacks for Machalik, who promptly delivered a bases-clearing triple.Machalik was thrown out trying to steal home, but Orsulak kept the fires burning with another hit back through the box. Stephen Hood put the finishing touches on the victory with a run-scoring double, sending the Coal Barons into tonight's do-or-die game with Lehigh in this double elimination event.LOST IN THE BARRAGE… Hood was the starting pitcher and kept Deep Run in check until he tired in the fourth. Black came in and did a solid job in relief.BY THE NUMBERS… Anthracite sent 20 batters to the plate over a two-inning stretch. After the 12-batter second-inning uprising, it followed with an eight-batter third inning.UP NEXT ... Anthracite and Lehigh will meet tonight at 6 p.m. in Saylorsburg.
