Lehighton man who fled police sentenced

A Lehighton man whose attempt at running from a Tamaqua police officer last year ended up with both being shocked by a Taser will spend up to two years behind bars after admitting to committing drug-related crimes in Schuylkill County.

Brad E. Sutton, 37, was charged by Tamaqua police with manufacture, delivery, or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, four counts of possessing a controlled substance he was not authorized to have, and driving while his operating privileges were suspended or revoked on Oct. 27, 2015.The charge of manufacturing was dropped.Schuylkill County President Judge William E. Baldwin sentenced Sutton to six to 12 months in jail, ordering him to begin his punishment on July 7.Baldwin also ordered him to pay court costs and fees.According to court documents, at around 11 a.m. Oct. 27, 2015, police saw Sutton driving on Orwigsburg Street and knew that his license had been suspended. The officer pulled him over and told him, "You don't have a license. You can't be driving."At that, Sutton started pulling away. The officer yelled at him to stop, and Sutton did. But when the officer approached, Sutton got out of the car and started walking away. The officer went over to him and told him he was being arrested for driving with a suspended license. Sutton refused to cooperate, and struggled as the officer tried to arrest him.Sutton was warned not to resist or he would be "tased."He ran, the officer in pursuit. The officer grabbed Sutton's jacket, but he shrugged out of it and continued running. The officer deployed his Taser. One probe snagged Sutton's shorts, but the other missed. The officer caught up to Sutton and deployed the Taser probes to his chest, enabling the officer to take Sutton down. But the wires became tangled in the officer's hands, shocking him - and Sutton - two or three times. When the officer pulled Sutton up, he saw a small black leather pouch on the ground. It contained seven small plastic bags of methamphetamine and three pills.Baldwin also sentenced Sutton to the same amount of time in a second case in which he was charged by Ryan Township police with possession with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance on June 8, 2015.The additional sentence will be served after the first.
