Northwestern edges Palmerton

There might be some new faces on Northwestern’s roster.

But the Tigers still know how to win.Northwestern put together a drive late in the fourth quarter and came up with a huge stop in the end zone to edge Palmerton 13-12 in the Colonial League season opener.“As a coach, they talk about the first game jitters and things that you have to work through,” Northwestern head coach Josh Snyder said afterward. “You can never quite expect that. You see the snaps; you see the fumbles; you see the missed tackles; you see the jitters and stuff like that. And that’s just really, really hard to overcome against a football team like Palmerton.“We overcame the adversity. We talk a lot about finding ways to get the job done; finding ways to win the football game. You gotta win by a point; that’s what the rule book says and that’s exactly what we did.”Junior Phil Dangello, serving as a wildcat quarterback for the Tigers (1-0), punched it in from five yards out and Hunter Miller provided what proved to be the game-winning extra point with under three minutes to play in the game. The score was setup by a 38-yard strike from freshman quarterback Deven Bollinger to receiver Trevor Cunningham on third-and-nine from Northwestern’s own 40 yard line earlier in the drive. In his first start, Bollinger showed the poise of a veteran, shaking off two interceptions to finish with 244 yards passing.“I was pretty nervous,” Bollinger admitted. “I had a great team around me, though. They kept me calm and it was a good, solid win in the end.”It didn’t hurt that Bollinger had Cunningham to throw to. The two connected for a 70-yard score in the first half that made it 6-6.“He impressed me a lot,” Cunningham said of Bollinger.“I think he will have a big impact on our program in the next few years. I think he’s a very good football player.”Despite finishing with seven catches for 183 yards, Cunningham’s biggest play of the night might have come on the defensive side of the ball. After Dangello’s touchdown the Blue Bombers (0-1) marched down the field but were unable to punch it in.Following a sack and two incompletions, Cunningham batted away a fourth-down pass from Palmerton quarterback Garrett Perschy in the end zone with 59 seconds to play, giving the Tigers the ball and ultimately the win.“It was a good football game. Give credit to Northwestern, they made the plays when they had to and they came out on top,” said Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak. “I’m proud of our effort, though. We played for 48 minutes and that’s what we talk about doing.“But at the same time we’re disappointed and we’re not satisfied by just playing for 48 minutes. We need to start getting over the hump and winning these types of games.”The Blue Bombers took the lead in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run by Perschy on their first drive of the game and held a 12-6 advantage at halftime after Mike Stasko returned a Bollinger interception 40-yards for a touchdown.WHO IS THAT? ... Northwestern running back Tyler Foster was forced to change jerseys in the second half because of a nose bleed. Foster started the game with No. 4, before switching to No. 10.QUITE A RUN ... Friday night’s win was the fifth in a row for Northwestern over Palmerton.NICE AND TIDY ... Palmerton had just one penalty for five yards.
