Pleasant Valley gets soccer, volleyball wins

Pleasant Valley's girls soccer and volleyball teams both picked up season-opening wins on Friday. Other area winners included the Northern Lehigh girls soccer team and the Northwestern boys soccer squad.

GIRLS SOCCERCatasauqua-No. LehighNorthern Lehigh got a hat trick from Jill Olewine en route to a 4-1 Colonial League triumph over Catasauqua.In addition to Olewine's three goals, Lexie Merkle also found the back of the net for the Lady Bulldogs (1-0).Northern Lehigh out-shot Catasauqua 16-14.PMWest-Pleasant ValleyPleasant Valley turned an early lead into a 4-1 victory over Pocono Mountain West in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.The Lady Bears (1-0) led 2-1 after the first half, and pulled away with two goals after the break.Elma Sabovic, Abby Leach, Erin Sharpe and Jamie Masullo scored for Pleasant Valley, which out-shot the Panthers (0-1) 20-6.BOYS SOCCERNo. Lehigh-CatasauquaCatasauqua rolled to a 6-2 victory over Northern Lehigh in a non-league game between a pair of Colonial League teams.Nick Rossnagle and Oscar Cordon both had a pair of goals for Catty.Dan Belfonti scored both of the Bulldogs' goals.Catasauqua finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots.Meyers-NorthwesternNorthwestern's offense was in high gear as it crushed Myers, 9-0, in a non-league game.JD Haaf and Andrew Goodolf both had hat tricks for the Tigers. Shafer added two goals while Chris Peters scored once. Brett Scott had two assists.Northwestern finished with a dominating 31-1 advantage in shots.FIELD HOCKEYDallas-LehightonLehighton and Dallas battled to a 2-2 tie.The Indians led 2-1 late in the game thanks to second half goals by Sam Muffley and Allie Rossino. Both of those goals were assisted by Emma Sawyer.But the Indians' hopes for a season-opening victory were dashed when Dallas' Sam Banks tallied her second goal of the game with just 3:33 remaining.Both teams had nine shots on goals. The Indians enjoyed a 9-2 advantage in corners. Michele Bozilesky had six saves in the Lehighton goal.Northern Lehigh-LibertyLiberty blanked Northern Lehigh, 3-0, in non-league action.Sadie Abboud, Charlie Colon and Anissa Abboud all had goals for the Hurricanes.Liberty had a huge 17-1 advantage in shots. Bulldog goalie Veronica Green made 14 saves.Holy Redeemer-NorthwesternNorthwestern fell to Holy Redeemer, 1-0, in a non-league game.A first half goal by Redeemer's Abby Shorts accounted for all the scoring.Holy Redeemer had a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corners.
