Fillies overpower JT

Overpowering.

That word was the theme of the night for the Marian Fillies volleyball team as they took care of business against Jim Thorpe on Thursday. The Fillies dominated in all three games, winning 25-11, 25-17, and 25-7.Early on, Marian made its mark in the serving department. Senior Maureen Kloap was a big reason for that as she came through with five aces in the first game.It was all about consistency from the service line for the Fillies and it's evident that they spend a lot of time on that facet of the game at practice."We spend a lot of time on serving at practice and we really do work hard at it," said Kloap. "We know how important serving is and we have a lot of girls who are skilled at it. Tonight was a great all around performance from everybody on the floor, just a great effort overall."In the second game, the Fillies went to their middle hitter in the form of 6-1 Abby Stankiewitch. The senior was hungry and fellow senior Courtney McCall fed her the ball as Stankiewitch collected six kills in the second. It was an area where the Olympians simply just didn't have an answer and Marian took advantage."We passed the ball pretty well tonight and when anyone in the middle was given the opportunity to score they executed," said Stankiewitch. "We've been playing really well as of late, we just have to stay focused and keep practicing and playing hard."Outside of Schuylkill League play, the Fillies have certainly challenged themselves, playing in multiple tournaments throughout the season against AAA teams. Some Marian faithful might have started to worry when they saw that they were coming home from tournaments without their usual hardware and sometimes without even a win. However, the competition was against some of the best teams in the state and in most instances against schools two classes above the Fillies.Playing that type of schedule looks like it has only sharpened the Fillies skills, as they have been running through Schuylkill League opponents in impressive fashion."This is the time of the year where we start to ramp it up," said Marian head coach John Fallabel. "We have a lot left in front us, so we have to continue to play well. We have a tournament at Pottsville coming up, some tough games against Nativity and Panther Valley, so we have to stay on top of it."WOMAN IN THE MIDDLE ... Marian's Abby Stankiewitch has been a dominant player through her career, but she was especially impressive against the Olympians. The senior came through with 15 kills and three aces on the evening. She totally changed the Thorpe offensive and defensive attack with her size and athleticism and continues to be consistent night in and night out.MCCALL THRIVING ... Senior Courtney McCall had to step into a new role this season as the setter for the Fillies and she has thrived in the process. McCall looked good again on Thursday, coming up with 29 assists. Setting is all about reading the oppositions' defense and then distributing the ball accordingly and it looks like the Fillies have another smart and focused setter in McCall.ACE IN THE HOLE ... Throughout the night serving was the key for the Fillies. At one point in the first game senior Maureen Kloap rattled off nine straight service points with six of them being aces. All in all the Fillies had 13 aces on the night.
