SCHUYLKILL COUNTY 4-H Club Activities

The Blue Mt. 4-H Livestock Club will be reorganizing at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at the Morgan household in Pine Grove. The club will elect officers and plan programs and activities for the coming year.The Blue Mt. 4-H Livestock Club is an active group of youth breeding and raising livestock for the Schuylkill County Fair and the PA Farm Show. The club geographically covers territory from Pine Grove to Tamaqua and areas of northern Berks County. It is open to youth ages 8 to 18 interested in learning about how to raise livestock for the market place.Members learn the important characteristics and real-world application of raising livestock in an ever-changing industry and staying current on industry trends as consumer demands dictate the industry standards. Learning is done through hands-on life learning experiences.Club members raise animals from rabbits and chickens to steers and pigs along with goats, sheep, dairy beef and alpacas. At a recent meeting members learned how to prepare new born pigs for a healthy life by vaccinating, providing supplements and clipping teeth.The club meets on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. The meeting combines an agenda that facilitates and disseminates information about various livestock projects. There is an educational component that allows participants to raise healthy livestock. There is also a physical element of activity for 4-H’ers to participate, to develop cooperation, team work and leadership skills.Refreshments round off each meeting where members may select healthy snacks made with fruit or vegetables grown in Schuylkill County.Interested youth may contact one of the club leaders at 570-739-2627 or at
