Bears reach title match

PARKLAND If you felt bad for Pleasant Valley's Jon White because he didn't make the singles finals in his senior season, don't. That wasn't his real goal.

As it turns out, White had a bigger dream that he and doubles partner Erik Ammermann would make the finals in District 11 Class AAA Doubles. They did just that on Friday with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Freedom's Aidan Bodeo-Lomicky and Ross Sonnenblick in a semifinal match played at Parkland High School."Honestly, doubles districts is what I play high school tennis for," said White, who was eliminated in the semifinals of the district singles tournament a week earlier. "It's definitely the most fun event of the season by far, so I'm stoked that we can go back to the final."Things didn't start particularly well for Ammermann and White, who came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed, when they fell behind Freedom 4-1 in the first set. After the fifth game of the set, coach Mark Allison huddled with his two players and got them turned around quickly. So quickly, that they won the next five games to take the first set 6-4."It was just more of a mind-set," said Ammermann. "We got into a slump early and were playing like we were really tight. We just kept talking to each other and coach had a talk with us, that we just had to loosen up and we did and it came out in our favor."Strangely enough, one problem that plagued White and Ammerman against Freedom was something that they've concentrated on during their run to the district finals."One thing we've stressed going through this tournament is the consistency of first serves, and we didn't really have that today, but we were both really solid on our second serves and that was huge," said Ammermann. The problem didn't come back to haunt them, since they were strong on second serves and were able to out volley Bodeo-Lomicky and Sonnenblick throughout the match.Last season, White teamed with Jon Walmach to play a duo from Emmaus in the District Doubles Finals, and captured the title. This season is special for both White and Ammerman who are not only both seniors, but good friends, too."We're great friends on-court and off-court," said White. "I've known him since sixth grade. In that second set, we just had to feed off of each other's energy a little bit and stay solid."To reach the semifinals, White and Ammermann finished off Will Kyaw and Isaac Shefer from East Stroudsburg North 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Next up for Pleasant Valley is the top-seeded duo of Nick Kshatri and Peter Harrison from Parkland. Kshatri advanced to the finals of the district singles tournament, where he lost to Emmaus' Matt FiztMaurice.White and Ammermann are both familiar with the players from Parkland and even figured that the road to a gold medal and a trip to the PIAA Tournament in Hershey would probably come down to a match with Kshatri and Harrison."They're a really strong doubles team, great volleys, great serves," said White. "I've known each of them for a while from tournaments, so we're just going to have to worry about playing our game and I think we have a great shot."Ammermann also has a lot of respect for the team from Parkland, but is relying on the confidence that he has in himself and White to complete their goal."We've had visions of this since the beginning, so we're excited," said Ammermann. "We're both very confident and we're hopeful about what we can do."

nancy scholz/times news Erik Ammermann of Pleasant Valley extends to return a shot during the District 11 Class AAA Doubles Tournament. Ammermann and teammate Jon White won a pair of matches to advance to Monday's finals.
