Bowmanstown gets $215K grant

At the monthly meeting of Bowmanstown Borough Council, engineer Jessica Rehrig of the Benesch Engineering Firm announced the borough has been approved for a grant.

Rehrig said, "The borough has been awarded $215,000 through the Local Shares Assessment Fund, or Gaming Grant, through Monroe County toward the completion of the Lime Street Project."Council also approved a resolution authorizing the borough to submit for a multimodal transportation grant.Rehrig said, "The multimodal grant will, if awarded, be sufficient funding to complete the entire Lime Street project, otherwise the borough will complete as much as they can with the allotted funding from the Local Shares Assessment Fund."The Local Shares Assessment Fund is provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.Municipalities within Monroe County and the five contiguous counties Carbon, Lackawanna, Northampton, Pike and Wayne or economic development agencies or redevelopment authorities in those counties are eligible for funds. The Lime Street Project will complete Lime Street. Currently Lime Street ends just past the Bowmanstown Fire Department. The project will connect Lime Street to the Meadow Crest Development. This will add a second access roadway to the development, which currently is only accessible off Fireline Road.In other matters, President Kara Scott said, "The borough has been contacted by UGI, the borough's natural gas provider, that they intend to do a multimillion dollar upgrade to the gas mains."UGI is requesting a meeting with council to discuss the upgrades, the route and answer any questions," Scott said. When questioned about the time frame of the project, Councilman Darren Thomas said the email information that he has received talked of a fall to winter time frame. It was discussed that this is part of the project occurring in Palmerton that will start on Mauch Chunk Street and continue into Bowmanstown.
