Re-entry program considered

Carbon County will soon begin looking into whether or not an offender re-entry program will be beneficial for inmates transitioning back into society after incarceration.

Last week, the county commissioners received an award letter from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency approving the county for a re-entry project grant in the amount of $10,000. The grant is match-free and 100 percent reimbursable.Anthony Harvilla of the county sheriff's office wrote the grant application. He said this money will help the county Criminal Justice Advisory Board determine if a re-entry program is possible in Carbon County.Currently, Carbon does not have a program like this in place for inmates finishing their incarceration."We're trying to identify inmates who would benefit from re-entry services," Harvilla said. Services could include referrals to community agencies. "We asked for their assistance to see if we have the resources available to support a program like this."He said the program would help combat some of the recidivism in the county prison system. The board now has until June 30, 2016, to do a study.
