Monroe lawmaker discusses funds

State Rep. David Parker, R-Monroe, said that he was pleased with Gov. Tom Wolf's quick response to his letter that he hand-delivered to Wolf last week.

The letter advocated Parker's proposed remedy to the more than $2.5 billion paid by Monroe County taxpayers because of the changes to the 1991 school funding formula, which has decimated Monroe County taxpayers. Wolf said he'd have his staff look into it.To date, the accumulated state funding shortfall exceeds $2.5 billion dollars for the four Monroe County school districts Parker represents.By far, Monroe County taxpayers are the most penalized property owners in the state.According to the Pennsylvania Budget and Policy Center, all four school districts Parker represents are in the top five for percentage of income consumed by property taxes. Pleasant Valley comes in No. 4 at 5.69 percent."Very unfairly, 129 of Pennsylvania's school districts pay less than 1.9 percent," Parker said."Taxpayers in West Greene School District only pay 0.29 percent. As a result, taxpayers in Monroe County school districts pay two to four times more than the rest of the state, andit is crippling our economy andfamilies."
