Thorpe council president resigns

A special meeting Thursday night led to a shakeup at the top of Jim Thorpe Borough Council.

According to Jim Thorpe Mayor Michael Sofranko, Betsy Ahner submitted her resignation earlier this week as council president.The resignation was approved Thursday by a 4-0 vote.Attending the meeting were Greg Strubinger, John McGuire, Joanne Klitsch and Paulette Haupt.Ahner, who was in her fourth year on council and as president, will also be withdrawing her candidacy for the upcoming election.Sofranko told a crowd at the Jim Thorpe Community Watch Meeting that health concerns may have prompted the resignation. That was confirmed this morning by the borough office.Calls to Ahner's home were not returned.Strubinger, who had been vice-president, was promoted to the presidency.John McGuire was voted as the new vice-president.Cindy Kmetz, billing and utility clerk, also submitted her resignation from the borough.
