Lehigh Valley season winding down

With the hockey season over in Philadelphia and the Phantoms winding down their season, there has been a lot of player movement in the waning days of the season. The Flyers returned forwards Jason Akeson and Nick Cousins, along with defensemen Brandon Manning and Mark Alt to the Phantoms to play out the rest of the season. Manning re-signed with the Flyers last Friday, insuring that he'll be playing in the organization next season.

All three saw a decent amount of playing time during their stint with the Flyers. Akeson played 13 games, boosting his total of NHL games to 22. The 24-year old played 53 games with the Phantoms prior to being recalled by Philadelphia and is currently the team leader in goals (22) and is fourth on the all-time scoring list for the Phantoms franchise.Cousins returns to Lehigh Valley with a chance to finish the season as the team's leading scorer, a title that Akeson has held the past three seasons. Before going to Philadelphia, where he played 11 games, Cousins had amassed 21 goals and 34 assists with the team and leads Akeson for the team scoring lead by four points.Manning was the lone AHL All-Star from Lehigh Valley this season and made four separate trips to Philadelphia on recalls this season, picking up three assists and putting together a plus-three rating on defense. Manning currently ranks sixth in the AHL among scoring by defensemen with 11 goals and 32 assists.Alt, 23, had been recalled on an emergency basis by the Flyers, but didn't play in a game with the team prior to being returned to Lehigh Valley. With Lehigh Valley officially out of the playoff hunt in the AHL, coach Terry Murray isn't expecting to see a team that just wants to play out the string of games. Instead, Murray is insisting that his players keep up a high level of intensity and he doesn't see that as being a problem for the team."With this group of guys, I don't worry about that," he said. "They know how to play the game right and they understand that you don't quit now, just because we're not a playoff team. You're paid to play the season and that's what they'll do."Andrew Gordon echoed his coach's sentiments and believes his teammates have too much pride to not play hard over the remaining games. In fact, he believes that with a mix of young players looking to make a name for themselves, the intensity level will stay pretty high."We've got a lot of young players and they know that if they slack off now, people will notice. For a while now, we've known that the playoffs were going to be a long shot, but I don't think anybody is quitting. Whenever you're on that ice, you're playing not just for now, but for the future and I think everybody understands that," said Gordon.PHANTOM FACTS: Among other moves, defenseman Adam Comrie and forward Andrew Johnston were both reassigned to the Reading Royals and will play in the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs ... Lehigh Valley will most likely finish fourth in the AHL in attendance, but they have an outside shot at passing Lake Erie to move into third place. Hershey averages 9,767 per game to lead the league, with Providence averaging 8,321, Lake Erie at 8,196 and Lehigh Valley at 8,132 on the season.
