Parent questions Jim Thorpe board

A Penn Forest Township man asked Jim Thorpe School Board on Monday why it informs parents about special sporting event activities, but failed to notify them about a district computer breach.

Paul Montemuro said there was a breach in the computer system of the schools "and we were never notified."Superintendent Brian J. Gasper clarified that the computer system wasn't hacked; that it was a breach. He said lunch numbers and computer passwords for logins were compromised "but there was no hacking."Gasper also indicated that the students responsible may have been identified, but that information cannot be released to the public.Montemuro asked about punishment for the students, with Gasper responding, "That's privy to the teachers."Gasper said no financial information was stolen and all students were given new passwords.Montemuro said he first learned of the incident when informed his child received a new password."I didn't get any type of phone calls," he said. "I'm getting hearsay."He said he also heard about an incident on a school stairway. No other details were provided, but Gasper said the matter is being reviewed by the police department and an assistant district attorney. The superintendent said, "There are two sides to every story and there are at least three sides to this."
