Raiders 'run' over Miners

There is nothing fancy or complicated about Tamaqua's offense.

The Blue Raiders simply like to line up, play smashmouth football and run the other team into submission.Last night, Tamaqua executed its game plan to perfection and ran roughshod over a struggling Minersville team that had little chance of defending Tamaqua's dynamic duo of Collin "Bud" Moyer and Tyler Skripko. The Blue Raiders backfield tandem combined for 357 yards on the ground in leading Tamaqua to a 40-8 Anthracite Football League victory over the Battlin' Miners. With the win (the Blue Raiders' third in a row), Tamaqua improves to 4-2 on the season, and has now won seven of its last eight games against Minersville. In their last three games against the Battlin' Miners, the Blue Raiders are averaging over 46 points per game."Bud and Tyler and are both big strong kids that are a perfect fit for our style of football," stated Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner. "They not only have burst, but they get the tough yardage as well. I think both backs are getting better as the year goes on, and that's what we expect out of them."Moyer wasted no time leaving his mark, as he culminated a 9-play, 69-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge on Tamaqua's opening possession.Moyer then added touchdown runs of 47 and 19 yards in the second quarter to give the Blue Raiders a 21-0 lead at halftime. While Minersville had just 22 yards of total offense in the first half, Tamaqua's ground-and-pound attack was rolling to 260 yards on the ground, 153 of them coming from Moyer."The offensive line and Skrip (fullback Tyler Skripko) did a great job of blocking tonight and I just hit the holes that they opened up," stated Moyer, who ended the night with 218 yards on 19 carries, including four touchdowns. "They made my job easy tonight."Moyer also eclipsed 200 yards rushing earlier this season against Schuylkill Valley when the junior ran for 226 yards on 29 carries. While Moyer capped the Tamaqua scoring with a 59-yard jaunt to pay dirt late in the third quarter, it was fullback Tyler Skripko's time to shine early in the second half. After carrying the ball seven times for 79 yards in the first half, Skripko took both of his second half handoffs to the house. A 17-yard run and a 43-yard scamper put the Blue Raiders ahead 33-0 midway through the third quarter."I love when coach gives me the ball. I don't get it a lot, but when I do, I like to take advantage of my opportunities," said Skripko. "With our style of offense, we want the defense to know that we're going to come at them and we're going to come at them hard. I just like to hit the hole and make plays."...and make plays he did. Skripko ran for a career-high 139 yards on just nine carries, including the two touchdowns. While the Tamaqua running game garnered the headlines, the play of the Blue Raiders defense shouldn't go unnoticed. After holding Panther Valley to just one yard of total offense last week, Tamaqua stymied the Battlin' Miners (1-5) to just 90 yards of offense this week, with 59 of those yards coming in the fourth quarter against the second and third string defense."You can't say enough about the way our defense has been playing these last few games," touted Bonner. "If we continue to play tough defense, it's going to put us in position to win a lot of games."We have a tough run the last three weeks of the season (against Blue Mountain, Lehighton and Marian), but if we continue running the ball like we have been and playing good defense, I like our chances against anybody."
