Marian holds 25th annual student appreciation dinner

The 25th annual Academic and Appreciation Dinner at Marian Catholic High School was held on May 6 with over 450 people in attendance.

The dinner was held in the school auditorium and was sponsored by the school's Academic and Student Appreciation Committee.Over 160 Marian Catholic High School students, who were guests of the school at the dinner, were recognized for their efforts in the classroom and their service to the Marian Catholic High School community.Groups honored were the National, French and Spanish Honor Societies, students who achieved honors in each of the first three quarters, Scholastic Scrimmage, Mock Trial, Yearbook, Rock Music Ministry, Peer Listeners and Student Council. Introduced were the Student Council officers for the school year 2014-15.Citizens Bee was also honored with special recognition given to Michael McHale for taking second place honors and James Ostergaard, who garnered fourth. Marian captured two of the four spots in the competition.Library and Chapel Aides, Student Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Senior Band and Chorus members, County Band and Chorus, Diocesan Band and Chorus, District Chorus, Schuylkill County Band and Chorus, Media Club, Future Business Leaders, Student Achievement Workers and the Marian Student Ambassadors were recognized.Alexandra Valusek was recognized as a guidance aide for her assistance in the guidance department. Connor Roberts, Henry Hinchey, Kaitlin Kowker, Danielle Spillman and Nicole Salerno were recognized for their support in the Development Office. Annette Ritzko and Faith Befano were honored for placing first in the Tastes of Greater Hazleton Apron Decorating Contest.Various awards were also announced.• Bishop's Catholic Scholars: Kelsey Hurst and Michael McHale.• Daughters of the American Revolution Award: Robert Divigili.• FBLA winners of the Pennsylvania State Conference: Hannah Zaboray, seventh place in public speaking, and Faith Befano, Taylor Horvat, Kayla Rodick and Annette Ritzko for parliamentary procedure. Michael Dino and Joseph Letcher for digital video production.• Matthew Karnish was honored by the American Chemical Society, High School Chemistry Competition, achieving the rank of section winner of the chemistry exam.• In the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition, Ryan Darrough was honored for his two first-place awards in behavioral science projects. Darrough also received a four-year perseverance award. Patrick Darrough captured first place in biology, and Henry Hinchey was a first-place winner in chemistry. Barry Fulton took third place honors in chemistry.• Certificates were given to members of the Drama Club.Sister Bernard Agnes, principal, commended the students on their academic excellence and their commitment to others. She thanked the seniors for "their outstanding leadership." She also thanked the parents for choosing Marian and recognized their sacrifices in making that choice.The program commenced with the announcement of the Philip and Rita Miler Scholarship, which is awarded to a student from Coaldale. This year's recipient was Cassandra Hoben.Teresa Sheer and Pat Morgans served as moderators. The Rev. Francis Schoenauer offered the invocation and benediction.
