Palmerton gets $26K recycling grant

Palmerton has received a recycling grant in the amount of $26,105.

On a 5-0 vote Thursday, borough council accepted the Act 101 Recycling Grant. Councilman Michael Ballard and council President Terry Costenbader were absent.The grant will be utilized to purchase new recycling containers for the borough.In other business, council:• Agreed to contract with the Pennsylvania Chief of Police Association to conduct civil service testing at a cost of $1,500 per day. The testing could take at least three days, council said.• Agreed to advertise for adopting an ordinance for fees for collection of taxes. The fee shall be $5 for a duplicate tax bill and $20 for returned checks.• Authorized the payment of invoices before approval at borough council meetings, provided council receives a copy of the checks that were written for the month, as well as any outstanding invoices.• Appointed, on a 4-0 vote, Councilman Kris Hoffner to serve as the borough's representative to the Carbon County Council of Governments.• Approved a well drilling permit for Darren Thomas at 1749 Mauch Chunk Road.• Approved a request from the Village at Palmerton to block off a portion of Princeton Avenue when it holds its 10th anniversary celebration from noon to 5 p.m. July 26.
