Pennsylvania farm facts

Andrew Frankenfield, a Penn State Extension agriculture educator, provided figures from the 2012 agricultural survey by the USDA National Agriculture Statistic Service:

• 59,302 farms in Pennsylvania. To qualify for the term of "farm," it must have sales of $1,000 or more in a year.• Average age of a farmer is 56.1.• Dairy is the number one product in Pennsylvania.• Pennsylvania produces $7.4 billion agricultural products a year, an increase of 27 percent since 2007.• 8,460 women are principal operators of Pennsylvania farms, and 4,252 of those list farming as their primary occupation.• In terms of revenue generated in Pennsylvania, the state's top five agricultural products are dairy products, cattle and calves, greenhouse and nursery products, mushrooms, and chicken eggs.
