Marian appreciation dinner held

The 25th Annual Academic and Appreciation Dinner at Marian Catholic High School was held on May 6 with more than 450 people in attendance. The dinner was sponsored by Marian's Academic and Student Appreciation Committee, with Teresa Sheer and Pat Morgans serving as moderators.

The Rev. Francis Schoenauer offered the invocation and benediction.More than 160 Marian Catholic High School students were recognized for their efforts in the classroom and for their service to the Marian Catholic High School community. Honorees included members of the National, French and Spanish Honor Societies and Citizens Bee team; the scholastic scrimmage, mock trial, yearbook, rock music ministry, peer listeners, drama club and student council groups; library and chapel aides, student Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, senior band and chorus, county band and chorus, diocesan band and chorus, district chorus, Schuylkill County Band and Chorus, media club, future business leaders, student achievement workers and the Marian Student Ambassadors.Students who achieved honor roll status in each of the first three quarters of the 2013-14 school year were also honored.Special recognition was given to Carbon County Citizen Bee team members Michael McHale, second place, and James Ostergaard, fourth place; Alexandra Valusek, guidance aide; Connor Roberts, Henry Hinchey, Kaitlin Kowker, Danielle Spillman and Nicole Salerno for their support in the development office; and Annette Ritzko and Faith Befano for placing first in the Tastes of Greater Hazleton Apron Decorating Contest.Various awards were announced, including Kelsey Hurst and Michael McHale, Bishop's Catholic Scholars; Robert Divigili, recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution Award; FBLA Pennsylvania State Conference winners Hannah Zaboray, Faith Befano, Taylor Horvat, Kayla Rodick, Annette Ritzko, Michael Dino and Joseph Letcher; Matthew Karnish, section winner of American Chemical Society's High School Chemistry Competition; Ryan Darrough, Patrick Darrough, Henry Hinchey, Barry Fulton, Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Regional Competition awards.Student Council officers for the 2014-2015 school year were introduced.Principal Sister Bernard Agnes spoke briefly, commending the students on their academic excellence and their commitment to others, thanking the seniors for "their outstanding leadership," adding "We look for the underclass to carry on." She also thanked the parents for choosing Marian and recognized their sacrifices in making that choice.The evening concluded with the announcement of the Philip and Rita Miler Scholarship, which is awarded to a student from Coaldale. This year's recipient was Cassandra Hoben.
