Veteran boxer pens second book

Bob Fernandez of Albrightsville has spent 75 years gathering lore about the sport of boxing, creating a collection of stories that now compiles his second book, "Boxing in New Jersey: 1900-1999."

Fernandez, who was a member of Seabees Mobile Construction Battalion #3 and #5 during the Korean War, was driven to write his book by the Seabee slogan he has come to know so well: "Can Do, Will Do, Done."Over the years, Fernandez discovered a love for boxing, and became a member of the International Veterans Boxing Association Ring #25.He was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006, the same year he published his first book, "Four Crumbling Houses," a transforming memoir about his experiences in the war and his love for the sport of boxing. Now, at 81 years old, Fernandez is unable to box as he battles chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and diabetes. However, he has found that writing is what keeps him going, and is at peace with the thought of his stories being told to boxing fans everywhere."Boxing in New Jersey: 1900-1999" will be available this month by the publisher McFarland & Company Inc. in various bookstores and online.

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES NEWS Fernandez served in the U.S. Navy Seabees as a welder and blacksmith from 1951 to 1955.
