West wins Keystone showdown

Composure is key in any playoff game, regardless of the circumstances.

And poise was never more critical than in the Senior Babe Ruth State Tournament elimination game between Keystone West and Keystone East, which featured a delay of nearly one hour for a light failure.Technical issues aside, both teams regrouped and made the best of the situation. Unfortunately, only one was able to advance, and on this night it was Keystone West, which moved on with an 11-6 win.Afterwards West coach Donnie Rehrig admitted he was concerned about how the delay would affect his team."Anytime you have a delay like that, you wonder how your team is going to come back," he said. "And it was a pretty lengthy delay, but I thought our kids stayed loose."And I think we had some good at bats and I thought we took advantage of some mistakes they (Keystone East) made in the field. Anytime you can pounce on teams when they're making mistakes and take advantage of it, that's critical."Specifically, Keystone West took a 3-3 game before the delay and turned it into a 9-3 advantage after the fifth inning, which proved to be the critical frame for both teams.West managed to score five runs on only one hit, capitalizing on four East errors.Lights or no lights, East coach Matt Baker acknowledged that the delay hurt the momentum his team had built early in the game, which included three runs in the top of the first and a 3-1 lead after the inning."Mentally, it really hurts because you lose everything you had before that," he said. "Our pitcher (Ryan Schaming) was in a rhythm and he was able to go back out and pitch a decent fourth inning. But by the fifth he was done."West's Anthony Rossino , who also scored three runs, came back with a lights out fourth inning, recording two strikeouts. But Rossino ran into trouble in the fifth, as East sent seven men to the plate and scored three runs on five hits. But West's Brady Niehioff came on to shut the door over the final two innings, allowing only three hits while working out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh."That's what I try to preach to our pitchers - when you get a few runs come back and have a shut down inning," Rehrig said. "And that's what they did. They gutted it out."Brady threw strikes, was around the zone and we played good defense. And that's what it takes to win games. You have to play good defense and have timely hitting and I think that's what we did."West added two more insurance runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. With two losses, East saw its tournament come to an abrupt end on Friday night. Still, those involved were thankful for the opportunity."It was all a learning experience. We didn't put this group of guys together until three days ago," said Bryne Mumbauer, who finished 4-for-4. "We only had a few days to practice, so maybe more time would have made a different result."But for the amount of time we had and the chemistry we built I think it helped us stay in the game."Now, West will focus on facing West End today at 12 p.m."It's basically survive and advance," said Rehrig. "We have to take one game at a time and do what we can. It's a quick turnaround, so we have to come ready to play from the first pitch."It's our home field and we'd like to play another game here."Keystone West 102 150 2 - 11 11 1Keystone East 300 030 0 - 6 13 7Schaming, Mumbauer (5) and Bachert; Rossino, Niehoff (5) and David. "It will now force us to be ready for the next team. Not that we weren't ready (today), but we weren't as sharp as we should have been."Once you come off of a game that was as lopsided as yesterday's, you're not as sharp. This game will be very important for the rest of the series."Keystone East took advantage of any mental lapses that might have plagued Pine Forge early.Sean McKee laced a single and came around to score on Nate Bachert's triple. Nick Frey followed with a single to bring in Bachert, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage after the first.Bachert was at it again in the third, reaching on a leadoff walk and moving to second on an errant pickoff throw. Cody Peters followed and reached on an error, which allowed Bachert to score, giving Keystone East a 3-1 lead. After scoring only one run through four innings, the typically potent Pine Forge offense started to come to life in the fifth. The visitors loaded the bases and scored two runs with two outs, as Jordan Shustack and Ryan Black both delivered clutch singles to tie the game 3-3.That momentum carried into the sixth, as Pine Forge surged ahead 5-3 on a Dalton Hughes single. Hughes came around to score on a wild pitch for the final tally. While the result wasn't what he was hoping for, Keystone East coach Matt Baker knows his team can't dwell on the loss."We've got to move on," Baker noted. "The past is in the past and we just have to move ahead and get ready to play more ball."Pine Forge 001 023 0 - 6 11 2Keystone East 201 000 0 - 3 7 1Black, Weeks (6) and Randall; Frey, Honor (6), Mcuhirter (6) and Bachert.
